Deepak Borkar, Veteran Percussionist of Hindi and Marathi Cinema, Passes Away; Shantanu Moitra, Devaki Pandit Pay Tribute

Deepak Borkar, renowned percussionist who worked in Hindi cinema, passed away in Mumbai on November 5, 2024. The veteran had worked with legendary music directors like RD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Khayyam, Jatin-Lalit, Anand-Milind, Shantanu Moitra and Vishal Bhardwaj, among others.

Renowned percussionist Deepak Borkar passed away in Mumbai on November 5, 2024. He was 72. In his illustrious career, Borkar worked as a percussionist or 'taal waadak' with some of the most legendary music directors and poets of Hindi and Marathi cinema, including RD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Khayyam, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Talat Mehmood, Jagjit Singh, Yashwant Dev, Sudhir Phadke, Ashok Patki, Gulzar, Bhupen Hazarika and more. He also collaborated with the newer lot of singers and musicians from the eighties and nineties like Anand-Milind, Jatin-Lalit, Falguni Pathak and Ashok Hande, among others. Some of the songs of the musician where he played unique musical instruments like the Bamboo Tarang and Ghunghroo Tarang include legendary singer Mohammed Rafi's "Yeh Jo Chilman Hai" from Mehboob Ki Mehndi (1971) and "Parbat Ke Uss Paar" from Sargam (1979), sung by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi. Recently, Deepak Borkar used traditional instruments to play music for the songs of the Marathi film Phullwanti (2024), starring Prajakta Mali and Gashmeer Mahajani. Borkar's recent Hindi film credits include Veer-Zaara (2004), Parineeta (2005), Aaja Nachle (2007), 3 Idiots (2008), and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), among other films. He is also known to have worked with Bollywood filmmaker and music composer Vishal Bhardwaj.

According to Saamana, Deepak Borkar was suffering from pneumonia and was being treated at a hospital in Kandivali in the city's western suburbs before he passed away. Music industry celebrities like music director and singer Shantanu Moitra and singer Devaki Pandit paid tribute to Deepak Borkar with heartfelt posts on social media. "I write this post in grief , as one of the most incredibly talented percussionist has left us . Deepak Borkar ji. So many of my songs he has played . Parineeta to Gulzar translates Tagore . I k always needed him in my songs . Such was his precision that we used to call him human metronome . He was always smiling and always immersed in the world of music . Will miss you Deepak ji. Today the metronomes will fall silent . Rest in peace," wrote Moitra on Instagram. "Veteran percussionist Deepak Borkar who has immortalised many songs with his unique sense of rhythm and sound is no more with us .
