She is a couple of movies old and is barely 18, but she is dealing with depression. Yes, Dangal gal Zaira Wasim opens up about her struggle with severe anxiety. Zaira who impressed us with her performance in Aamir Khan's box office sensation Dangal, and then went on to showcase her acting prowess yet again to cinegoers in her second outing Secret Superstar, has been battling with Depression for quite some time now.
In an Instagram post, Wasim expressed about the challenges she is facing, and how she has been coping with them all these years. "Popping 5 antidepressants every day, anxiety attacks, being rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night, feeling empty, restless, anxious, hallucinations, having sore limbs from sleeping too much to not being able to sleep for weeks, from overeating to starving myself, unexplained fatigue, body ache, self-loathing, nervous breakdowns, suicidal thoughts were all parts of this PHASE," posts Zaira.
While it is sad to know that Zaira has been battling with these issues, it would be pertinent to note that many B-town celebs, in the recent pasts, came forward to talk about their psychological woes. The classic case in point is; Karana Johar and Deepika Padukone. The two were widely appreciated, and were even being called brave, for spreading awareness about the challenge. But Bollywood's Dabangg dude Salman Khan has a realistic and a rather brave take on the subject matter being discussed!
So when Salman Khan was asked about Bollywood celebs talking about depression in their interviews and on various social platforms, here's what Khan had to say. "I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can't afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional because no matter what I am going through, it works against me."
Honestly, Bollywood celebs repeating their sorry how-I-challenged-my-depression saga ad nauseum, they unconsciously send out a wrong message sometimes. The constant bombarding is only adding to the woes. In that regard what Salman Khan said is not inappropriate. The message is loud and clear--if you are depressed, you need to get out of it and seek professional help if needed.
Our take on the issue is simple: We live in a very complicated world. And as if that's not enough, we choose our own complications too! No wonder there are more people around us, more than ever before, who are messed up in their heads, to say the least. But mollycoddling and glorifying the problem is not going to serve any purpose. Education is a must, and what one must avoid is the constant advertisement of the issue that needs to be addressed judiciously.
