Sarat Chandra's famous novel Devdas has gotten quite a few movie adaptions, some of them have clicked well with the audiences. Some like Shah Rukh Khan's Devdas was nearly faithful to the novel, while Anurag Kashyap's Dev D gave the tale a modern, twisty spin. Now acclaimed director Sudhir Mishra (Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi) is giving the tragic romantic entanglement of Devdas, Paro and Chandramukhi his own unique spin with shades of political intrigue with Daas Dev.
Like the title, even the movie is touted to be a reverse Devdas. So Rahul Bhat, known to television viewers for his leading role in the serial Heena, is playing the titular lead role of Daas Dev. Paro is played by Richa Chadha, while Chandramukhi is now Chandni and is played by Aditi Rao Hydari. The trailer shows their screwed up love triangle as a sloshed up Daas tries to balance his lusty and political ambitions.
As expected from a Sudhir Mishra movie, there are plenty of dark, realistic elements, laced with cuss words and lovemaking scenes. The supporting cast, involving Saurabh Shukla, Vineet Singh and Vipin Sharma, also add intrigue with their dynamic characters. However, we do not get a proper glimpse of what Anurag Kashyap is playing in the movie.
Here's the trailer
Here's the official synopsis of the movie taken from their YouTube page - "Daas Dev is a film about power as it gets in the way of love. Sudhir Mishra in his Daas Dev tells us a reverse tale of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee’s DevDas where his Dev ultimately breaks free from his addictions and dynastic ambitions of his family, Paro does not stay trapped behind a big gate inside her husbands house and as for Chandni- is she a money handler, fixer, manipulator or simply a girl in love? In today’s world, will our characters be able to come together and ditch the Daas?"
Daas Dev is scheduled to release on March 23.
