2019 Cannes Film Festival will begin on Tuesday, 14 May and ends on
Saturday, 25 May. The film festival is an annual event held in Cannes, France and it previews genres of films and documentaries from all around the world. Cannes Film Festival aims at contributing towards the development of cinema and boost the film industry worldwide. However, since the humongous event sees prominent people from the world of cinema from all around the world in one place, there also becomes room for controversies and issues. Topless Simone Silva and Robert Mitchum
This is probably the most-talked-about Cannes controversies from the past. Simone Silva, the Egyptian-born French film actress, took her top off during one of the photoshoots with Hollywood star Robert Mitchum and grabbed headlines. The infamous incident took place at the 1954 festival. The British B-movie actress and glamour model moved her flimsy scarf top and cuddled up to Robert Mitchum while covering her breasts with her hands.
Kangana Rape Joke
Stories from India are also plenty, one of which is the infamous 'rape joke' controversy from last year Cannes Film Festival. The actress attended the after-party with Jim Sarbh who cracked a rape joke that has left Twitter fuming after a video clip of the incident went viral. Jim could be heard saying, “I’d rather be raped by 12 prostitutes than touch alcohol to which she says "Me too, I didn’t know that was an option’.” Kangana was also seen laughing along with the rest of them. Kangana, who has always been outspoken and taken a stand for what's right enjoyed the joke.
Dead Pigeon Controversy
Cannes Film Festival 2001, 24 Hour Party People actors attacked each other with dead pigeons on a private Cannes beach. They splattered diners at an exclusive restaurant with fake blood, feathers and worse. The actors were eventually threatened by the people in charge and then ejected from the beach along with the film crew and the entourage.
Kristen Stewart Heels Controversy
Less than a controversy, this was more of a rebellious act. Kristen Stewart removed her heels last year in 2018 while walking down the red carpet at Cannes Film Festival. It is said that she did this to take a stand against the dress code of the film festival that dictating all female guests to wear heels.

Vincent Gallo vs Roger Ebert Controversy
Another infamous controversy was witnessed in the 2003 Cannes festival when cult film director and actor Vincent Gallo turned up to Cannes in 2003 with movies The Brown Bunny, which was termed as one of the most graphic films and so much unsimulated oral sex scene was in it the critics booed in disgust. Roger Ebert called it "the worst film in the history of the festival."
