World Snake Day, celebrated annually on July 16, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about these fascinating reptiles and their crucial role in ecosystems worldwide. This day serves as an opportunity to dispel myths and misunderstandings surrounding snakes, highlighting their diverse habitats, behaviours, and conservation challenges. Snakes play pivotal roles in maintaining ecological balance by controlling pest populations and serving as indicators of environmental health. Through education and outreach efforts on World Snake Day, conservationists and enthusiasts alike strive to promote coexistence and appreciation for these often misunderstood creatures. World Snake Day 2024 Date and Theme: Know the Significance of the Day That Highlights the Need To Protect and Conserve the Slithering Reptiles.

In commemorating World Snake Day, let's have some fun and look at seven movies where the slithering reptile took the centre stage and gave us some cheesy fun thrills.

Anaconda

A Still From Anaconda

Anaconda is perhaps the most famous snake movie ever made, thanks no less to its loaded cast, which includes Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Ice Cube, and Owen Wilson. It is a cheesy creature flick with hammy performances and some questionable effects, but quite fun nevertheless. It also led to several sequels, though without that star-cast quality. You can watch Anaconda on JioCinema.

Snakes on a Plane

A Still From Snakes on a Plane

When Samuel L Jackson shouts mid-scene, "I have had it with these motherf*cking snakes on this motherf*cking plane!" you know that an iconic line is born. This thriller has a killer plotline - what if a plane carrying a terrorist gets infested by different species of snakes, and it is upto Nick Fury to save the hell out of the passengers? If this doesn't reel you in, why even watch movies?

Nagin

A Still From Nagin

Rajkumar Kohli's 1976 film was about a shape-shifting snake, played by Reena Roy, who vows vengeance against a group of friends after one of them accidentally kills her snake lover. The movie featured an ensemble cast including Sunil Dutt, Jeetendra, Feroz Khan, Sanjay Khan, Rekha, Mumtaz, Vinod Mehra, Yogeeta Bali, Kabir Bedi, and Anil Dhawan. It was later remade in Tamil as Neeya? with Kamal Haasan in the lead. Kohli used this formula again to relaunch his son Armaan Kohli back in acting with Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahaani, again a multi-starrer, which turned out to be one of the worst Hindi films ever made. You can watch Nagin on YouTube.

Nagina

A Still From Nagina

From a villainous shape-shifting naagin to a heroic one. Harmesh Malhotra's 1986 film starred Sridevi as the shape-shifter who falls in love with a human, played by Rishi Kapoor, though she intended to kill him once as part of her vengeance. Amrish Puri plays an evil tantrik in one of his most famous negative roles, and the movie is also remembered for the song "Main Teri Dushman Dushman Tu", sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Nagina spawned a sequel two years later in the less successful Nigahen, which also had Sridevi in the lead, but Sunny Deol replaced Rishi Kapoor as the male lead. Nagina is available on Prime Video.

Tum Mere Ho

A Still From Tum Mere Ho

Post their super breakout success in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla ended up doing some kitschy films early in their career, some of them together. One such movie is Tum Here Ho, a star-crossed love story that also involves snakes and curses. The movie was made famous years later when YouTube channel Pretentious Movie Reviews roasted it for its silly plotline and some very problematic scenes. Tum Mere Ho is available to watch on YouTube. World Snake Day: Five Exotic Serpents You Can’t Unsee, View Pics.

Hisss

A Still From Hisss

Not many remember that the great David Lynch's daughter Jeinner Lynch had made a film about a shape-shifting snake starring Mallika Sherawat in the lead, playing the reptile. It also managed to rope in two great actors in Divya Dutta and the late Irrfan Khan. Hisss turned out to be a terrible movie with bad direction and poor creature effects, and didn't launch Sherawat's Hollywood career as she had expected. Hisss is streaming on Prime Video.

Hatya - The Murder

A Still From Hatya - The Murder

We thought of including Jaani Dushman in this list, but then, since Nagin is already in here, we went for another snake-shaped oddity starring one of Jaani Dushman's lead actors, Akshay Kumar. Like how many of you know that he has played a shape-shifting snake in a movie? If you haven't, then you better watch Hatya - The Murder, available on YouTube, a film that began production in the early '90s but was released in 2004!
