Satire may not be a genre that Bollywood usually attempts, but we have made some really good films in here. Some of my favourite movies in the genre happen to be Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, OMG - Oh My God, Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho, Jolly LLB etc. Trying to fit its place among these awesome movies is one of this week's release, Welcome to New York. Set against the backdrop of IIFA, the movie was supposed to be a meta-commentary on award shows and the stars that attend it. While Diljit Dosanjh and Sonakshi Sinha play the main leads, Karan Johar has a double role in the movie. So how does Welcome To New York work as a satire?

Frankly, it doesn't work much as a spoof because most of the humour fall flat. Some portions, involving Karan Johar acting himself, do manage a chuckle here and there, but the rest is just a torture to go through, despite the promise of many celeb cameos. Now that we have seen it, I list down five WTF scenes in the movie that will make you ask 'Just why'. Needless to say, SPOILER ALERT!

The IIFA branding (and Jackky Bhagnani's 'cameo')

We knew that the movie was set against the backdrop of IIFA, but we did hope against hope that WTNY might take potshots against how it works. However, while there were a couple of jabs here and there, the movie ended up being a two hour advert for IIFA. Also as the movie is produced by Puja Entertainment, we also get to have two forced glimpses of producer's son Jackky Bhagnani as part of the celebs attending the event. Well, after all you are paying for this circus, so why not have a spot for yourself?

Katrina and Aditya Roy Kapur talking about acting

Apart from glimpses of stars coming to attend IIFA, there are celebs, like Salman, Katrina kaif, Rana, Sushant Singh Rajput, Aditya Roy Kapur, making proper cameo appearances. Though none of them manage to make much of an impact, Aditya and Katrina manage to elicit some unintentional laughter when they talk about acting in two separate scenes. Knowing how critics tear them apart for their errr...limited histrionic ability (remember Fitoor?), Diljit learning acting from these two is quite far-fetched an idea!

Salman Khan's cameo

Salman Khan's cameo was already spoilt when the song Naina Phisal Gaye was revealed before the movie came out. The song had Sonakshi imagining that she is taking measurement for Salman's suit, and has the actor do quite a lot of suggestive wiggling. Imagine that, will you!

Karan Johar coming onto Rana Daggubati

Some of the movie's watchable funny scenes involve Karan Johar and his diva-esque ways. When Karan Johar's evil doppelganger Arjun kidnaps him near the climax and ties him to a chair, Rana Daggubati arrives to save the director. Invoking his inner Bhalladeva, Rana saves him from the goons, which make Karan act all gooey for him. It is quite admirable of Karan to make a mockery of himself in the scene, but the scene is nowhere as funny as the writers intended it to be.

The climax on IIFA stage

The climax is set on the IIFA stage with a confused Riteish caught between two Karan Johar's (even invoking an Andaz Apna Apna moment). The whole thing looked like a poorly scripted award skit, replete with fake reactions from the celebs in the crowd. There is also a dance performance by Teji (Diljit) that comes after Salman's performance. Like seriously? Are we really talking about the same show where Karan, Riteish and Varun Dhawan cracked lame nepotism jokes?
