Veere Di Wedding Trolled Online: From Being ‘Sanskaari’ to ‘Grandmother Ashamed of Masturbation’, Five Reasons and All Invalid

The backlash that Veere Di Wedding is facing, hints at the growing culture of blatantly bashing anything that is female-centric.

Not so long ago, when Lipstick Under My Burkha was released, there was a significant outrage on social media around the film's strong feminist and sexual content. The censor board  also raised objections because the film was 'women-centric'. Now, with the release of Veere Di Wedding, there is a new set of trolls picking on Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Shikha Talsania and Kareena Kapoor Khan, the actresses in the film and its content. The trolls don't have one particular problem. They are quoting various reasons about why the film is profane and why should it be boycotted. We list down five reasons the trolls are attacking Veere Di Wedding and why they are all invalid.

Wrong Idea of Feminism

People are attacking Veere Di Wedding for portraying random things in the name of feminism. They argue that women drinking, smoking, abusing and having sex with multiple men is not feminism. The argument is correct, but the basis of it isn't. The makers of the film never said it is a feminist film. Feminism is just a word people have picked, and anything about women labelled 'Feminist'. That is not how it works. Veere Di Wedding just happens to be a film about four women. Neither of the makers ever said that they want to talk about feminism  or make a point about women rights through the movie. The whole argument, therefore, is null and void.

Kathua Rape Case

Some Hindutva trolls have an objection because the film's starcast stood up for justice in Kathua rape case. When an eight-year-old was brutally raped and murdered in Kashmir, allegedly by Hindu men, in a temple, because she was a Muslim child, Bollywood celebrities, which included Sonam Kapoor and Swara Bhaskar, raised their voices against the crime. So going by the logic of these fanatic trolls, the film should be boycotted because the actresses allegedly maligned Hindu pride. Speaking of logic, how come these trolls have no qualms equating Hindu pride with rape but are offended when someone speaks against rape?

Swara Bhaskar's Masturbation Scene

A set of trolls have also raised objections because their grandmoms were offended by Swara Bhaskar's masturbation scene in the film. Funnily, all these trolls have the same story to share. Veere Di Wedding is an A-rated film; the trailer clearly showcased that the film has sexual content. Why will one go to watch it with his/her conservative grandma? Secondly, these are just a set of trolls mindlessly tweeting the same tweet with a clear objective to spread hate and to attack the film.

Profanity

Profanity is another reason why Veere Di Wedding is being trolled. Sex, kissing, abusing, drinking and smoking is termed as profanity. Trolls argue that such films are a bad influence on our 'Indian culture'. Firstly, the film is A-rated. Our censor boards give a film an A certificate because of explicit content. So, people can entirely use their discretion whether to watch the movie or not. Secondly, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Tittu ki Sweety and Kaalakaandi are some recent films with pretty much the same kind of content. But people didn't oppose them because the male actors were involved. How does a woman doing the same things make it profane?

'Sanskaar'

There are also those trolls, who think Veere Di Wedding is not something Indian women can relate to and is against our sanskaar and sanskriti. To burst your bubble, the film is about four urban, affluent women. They have money, and they spend it. They go on a trip to Thailand, chill, splurge and have a good time. Not every women-centric film has to be about saree-clad, oppressed women. Not every woman in the country has the same problems. This movie is about women with no financial or social restrictions, but emotional and sexual issues.

Ekta Kapoor's tweet sums up what Veere Di Wedding is all about:

Veere Di Wedding may not be the best story about women, the best film about this generation or not even just the best film to watch, but it indeed is not a film worth all the trolling and criticism. The reasons why trolls want a boycott on this film is only a justification of why such a movie needs to be made in the first place.
