Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez were brutally murdered on October 20, 2011. The two were trying to protect their female friends by a group of men from being harassed. Keenan had tried to object the lewd remarks those group of men had passed on their female friends. Keenan and his friend circle who had thought the issue ended there, didn’t realise that the group of men would return with deadly weapons to kill them. Keenan and Reuben were attacked with knives and the bystanders didn’t step forward to help them. Keenan died on the spot and a week later, Reuben succumbed to his injuries. Jitendra Rana was one of the prime accused in this 2011 double murder case and he has been granted furlough by the Bombay High Court, reports TOI. Varun Dhawan took to Twitter and posted, “This cannot be allowed this man has committed murder how can he be allowed out. I knew Reuben personally keenan and he deserve justice we cannot allow this #mumbai”. This double murder incident had sent a shock waves to all Mumbaikars. About this furlough TOI quoted a division bench of Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari and Justice Prakash Naik saying, “The furlough arrangement has been statutorily made so as to enable the convict to maintain contacts with his family and society. We, therefore, find that the reasons assigned (by the police to oppose his release) are unsustainable. The authorities, while releasing Rana on furlough leave, can impose appropriate conditions, including one requiring him and his relatives to report at a particular police station at regular intervals.”

The three other men besides Jitendra Rana that the sessions court had convicted in 2016 for this double murder case include Satish Dulgaj, Deepak Piwal and Sunil Both. Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandez were stabbed to death outside a restaurant in Andheri, Mumbai.
