The trailer of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's upcoming film Shikara released recently and it created stir given its sensitive content. The film is based on the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits, displaced from the valley in 1990. While netizens remained divided on the trailer, it is filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra's recent remarks about the intent of his this film that have resulted in a backlash and Twitterati calling for a boycott on the film. In a recent interview, Chopra spoke about the film being a way of saying people needed to move from what happened 30 years ago. In a clip of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's interaction from Shikara's promotional event, the director is heard saying, "30 years have passed. Let's say sorry & move on. It is like two friends who have a fallout but they love each other." Twitterati immediately attacked the filmmaker for trivializing the issue. The director has been receiving a lot of flak on social media and now #BoycottShikara has also started to trend owing to his statement.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit also criticised the film on Twitter as he said, "Making a film on #KashmiriHinduExodus & not questioning the majority population who came out in support of terrorists esp. on 19th Jan. Is like giving a clean chit to #AjmalKasab. Victim saying sorry to trrsts & and terrorisists hugging the victim is a big farce & impossible." This was met by a strong response from the film's writer, Rahul Pandita who took to Twitter to respond t and said, "I am a Kashmiri Pandit who lost everything in 1990, while you were doing God knows what in Bombay. I am the writer of #shikara and I would not let anyone compromise on the Pandit story. I will not betray the memory of those who fell to the bullets of radical Islamists."
