When the makers of any movie tell you to keep your brains at home while watching a movie, sometimes it helps. Like in the case of Total Dhamaal. Expecting a visual masterpiece like Tumbbad or an exhilarating adrenaline rush like Gully Boy from this Indra Kumar film is utterly silly, if you have ever followed this franchise. Total Dhamaal is zany, goofy and illogical and relies on gags and physical comedy, not to mention a big starry cast to make things work. Most of the times, it is a funny movie that will make you go ROFL in a couple of sequences. Total Dhamaal Movie Review: Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit’s Madcap Treasure Hunt Is a Surprisingly Fun-Filled Ride With a Few Bumps on the Way.
Sure, I wished that Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit's portions were better written and less caricatured. Thankfully, the actors' experience shines through these weak portions. Also, the third act, involving a zoo and a few animals, is a drag and mostly unfunny. However, the rest of the film is more than decent watch thanks to a cast, who is game for all the physical comedy. Out of the performers, Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Mishra, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaaferi stand out.
In this feature, we look at the five scenes in Total Dhamaal that bring the house down! Needless to say, big SPOILERS ahead!
Helicopter Ride
Or, the Johnny Lever sequence. The comic legend plays a helicopter driver who owns Moon Moon Services, and is hired by Riteish Deshmukh's Lallan to take him to Janakpur. Nothing in the scene makes any kind of logic, but the way Riteish, Lever and Pitobash make their zingers bounce off each other makes it hilarious.
The Rail Road Sequence
The corrupt Police Commissioner (Boman Irani) and his team chase Guddu (Ajay Devgn) and his crony (Sanjay Mishra) on wheels and trap them on a railroad track. Seeing no way out, Guddu drives his vehicle into a rail tunnel followed by the police. As the expectations go, they see a light coming from the opposite end, Okay, I am not saying much as it would spoil the whole sequence. Bhidu!
Easily the best scene in the film and also the best voiceover cameo in a Bollywood film, since Salman Khan in Main Tera Hero (yup, we don't have great choices there). The Chindi GPS scene was one of the highlights in the trailer and also in the movie too, with Jackie Shroff bringing his Bhidu persona to the most hilarious effect. The way his voice rags Guddu is laughter guaranteed.
The Quicksand Scene
Okay, this scene is lifted off from Indiana Jones and Kingdom of The Crystal Skull. But what works here is the amazing camaraderie on display between Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaaferi. Also how the whole sequence ends is unexpected and funny!
Bribing God!
After jumping from the about-to-crash helicopter, Lalla and Jingur land on an under-construction building. While trying to escape from there, Lallan finds himself hanging on a steel beam. To help from escape his predicament, Lallan prays to God to save him from there and bribes him 500 kilos of sweet. God listens and he is returned to safety. A greedy Lallan immediately backs out of the promise, and God immediately sends him back to his situation!
