It was supposed to be a record-breaker, but it ended up being one of the most disappointing films of the year. There were high hopes from Thugs of Hindostan, which was touted as the most expensive Bollywood film of the year, costing about Rs 250 - Rs 300 crore in both production and marketing. The makers had easy hopes of recovering that amount, since the lead was Aamir Khan, who has the knack of owning the box office with his record-breaking films. He was collaborating with Yash Raj Films after the blockbuster Dhoom 3. November 2018 Box Office: Aamir Khan's Thugs of Hindostan, Akshay Kuma's 2.0 - Which Movie Ruled The Month?
Sadly, the movie underperformed at the box office, even though it has the highest opening day earnings for a film in India. Thugs of Hindostan has grossed just about Rs 150 crore in India. It even stumbled at the overseas box office. However, Aamir Khan would have had hopes that the movie would perform in his favourite box office territory - China. Thugs of Hindostan has opened in China on December 28 and contrary to any hopes of Aamir's fans, has underperformed there as well. The movie has only collected $450k from advance sales, which is the same kind of poor business that Akshay Kumar's PadMan did there, as per a report in Box Office India. Going by these initial signs, it looks like the Chinese audiences do not have the patience for their 'Uncle Aamir''s misfire. They had loved his past movies like PK, Dangal and Secret Superstar which made a killing there. Dangal even became the highest grossing non-Hollywood film in China.
The report further states that it won't be the producers who would be at loss here, but the distributors in China, who has bought the rights of the film at an astronomical price.
