The Thackeray trailer has created highly divided opinions on social media, ever since the promo was unveiled on December 26. The movie is based on the life of the late Shiv Sena founder and political kingpin in Maharashtra, Balasaheb Thackeray. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the role of Bal Thackeray in the movie, while Amrita Rao, in her comeback role, is playing his wife Meena Tai. The movie shows the political head's rise as a leader of masses in the '70s to his controversial role in the 1993 Bombay riots. Now, Thackeray is produced by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut who has also written the film. So expecting a balanced piece from the film is highly impossible. The trailer is quite evident in showing the departed politician as a hero, whose fiery dialogues are aimed to appease the masses. It's another matter that these dialogues are highly controversial considering that some of them target certain communities. If you are aware of the political machinations of Bal Thackeray, you might be knowing that his speeches had targetted Muslims, as well as the migrants from Uttar Pradesh who come to Mumbai for livelihood. So it is quite ironical that the makers cast Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the role, an actor who meets both the criteria. Sure, the actor looks the part, though he doesn't exactly nail the accent, and yet he is the one getting the most flak for agreeing to be a part of the film, and eulogising a man whose speeches has incited violence against the minorities. What's even interesting is the fact that Nawazuddin Siddiqui was pulled out of a Ramleela because of his religion, by the same party whose founder he is playing in the film!

Nawazuddin playing #Thackeray must be so economical for the producers, as Nawaz could slap himself in a scene where Thackeray has to beat a North Indian.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, a Muslim, that too from UP, glorifying Bal Thackeray, is like a Jew eulogizing Hitler

- @Nawazuddin_S, I respect the artistic freedom of you and the people behind this film.
But glorifying violence and bigotry and calling it courage and wisdom is not a good idea. https://t.co/O9aCFJyJaq

Reason for Shiv Sena's opposition to Nawazuddin? He's a muslim.
And this same sellout coward is now playing the terrorist #Thackeray and glorifying him. Not having a spine isn't a crime. But at least have some shame @Nawazuddin_S! pic.twitter.com/Zi7RXQmhuj

Why, even Richa Chadha and Tamil star Siddharth were quite vocal about Nawazuddin taking up the role.
Nawazuddin has repeated 'Uthao lungi bajao pungi' (lift the lungi and *'#$ him) in the film #Thackeray. Clearly hate speech against South Indians... In a film glorifying the person who said it! Are you planning to make money out of this propaganda? Stop selling hate! Scary stuff!

To be fair to Nawazuddin, we have had movies in Bollywood where actual underworld dons have been glorified. While we cannot judge the movie just by the trailer, we are hoping that the movie will be not as acerbic as what it is being perceived.
