Teachers' Day 2024 will fall on September 5, 2024. It is the day when Indians shower love and respect to teachers who build young minds to serve society and nation at large. While many countries around the world celebrate Teachers' Day, in India, the day is commemorated on the birthday of the second President of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was born on that date in 1888. Schools all over India hold small functions where children make their teachers feel special through handmade cards, flower bouquets and so on. In some places, events happen on a grander scale. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a brilliant student had studied on scholarships throughout his life. He passed out from Madras Christian College, one of the best-known institutions in South India and later took up a teaching job at the University of Mysore. A student of philosophy, he had great respect for his teacher, Professor Dr. Alfred George Hogg.

Hindi films too have explored the impact and role of teachers on young minds. While such movies are far and few in Bollywood, the ones made are indeed memorable. On the occasion of Teacher's Day let us revisit the best ones...

‘Taare Zameen Par’

This is the movie that comes first to our minds. Taare Zameen Par (2007) was directed by Aamir Khan. In the film, we see the pain and trauma of Ishaan (Darsheel Safary), a young boy who is packed off to a boarding school to improve his academic grades. There, his art teacher Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) suspects that he has dyslexia. Gradually, he helps him overcome his reading disorder. The movie made close to Rs 98.5 crores at the box office. Teachers’ Day 2024 Speech Ideas for Students: Short and Long Speeches in English for Kids To Express Gratitude to the Classroom Heroes (Watch Videos).

‘Hichki’

Rani Mukerji delivered a fabulous performance as Naina Mathur, a teacher who suffers from Tourette Syndrome. The Yash Raj movie was directed by Siddharth P Malhotra. How Naina navigates a class full of defiant students and leads them to success is what Hichki was all about.

‘Black’

Many believe Black (2005) is the best Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie in terms of drama and emotions. Rani Mukerji did a stupendous job as Michelle McNally in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film. Amitabh Bachchan also delivered one of his career's finest performances as Debraj Sahai. It was based on the autobiography of Helen Keller. The movie is available on Netflix.

‘Iqbal’

Nagesh Kukunoor and his brand of cinema was loved by Indie movie lovers. Naseeruddin Shah was awesome in Iqbal (2005) as the alcoholic cricket coach. Shreyas Talpade and Shweta Basu Prasad did a fine job as siblings. This movie is an intimate story of an underdog in a nation obsessed with cricket.

These five movies are indeed the top-tier ones when one talks about inspiring Hindi films on student and teacher relationships. Teacher's Day is an occasion to celebrate those who take on the roles of an educator, philosopher, mentor and guide for some. We wish you a Happy Teacher's Day.
