Last week, the nation was rocked by the horrific news of the brutal murder of 2-year-old Twinkle Sharma in Aligarh. The heinous crime left the nation stunned with disgust as people took to social media to share their grief and anger at such a sorry state of humanity in the country. Several Bollywood celebrities too took to social media as they tweeted asking for speedy justice, asking for the case to be fast-tracked.
Renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar even hinted at a public execution as he tweeted saying, "This case should be fast-tracked in the courts by daily hearings. Any one can guess the inevitable and obvious verdict of any court on this most heinous crime possible. Wish he could be hanged publicly." Actress Tanushree Dutta who has been one of the key women to have given an impetus to the MeToo movement in India also reacted to this horrific incident. In her recent open letter on the MeToo movement, the actress said, "I tried to fuel social, mental and emotional change in India last year and bring awareness to ongoing oppression and tried to help myself and others. Many in the nation and even well meaning persons abroad thought I was being overeactive right??”
She further adds, "Now even 3-year-olds and babies are not being spared!! Do you see now how sick you have become?? This society around you is a reflection of yourself so don't be quick to raise a finger and excuse yourself. Hate, misogyny, perversion..all this is YOU but you didn't see your shadow self so now it's being manifest and showing you what YOU truly are, Not the good human beings you thought you were but a fallen, ignorant, condemned race on the verge of self detonation.”
Not just Tanushree, actress Gul Panag also shared her concern about the kind of society we are becoming. She had tweeted, "That we live in a country where even toddlers aren't safe, fills me with horror. That #TwinkleSharma had a her life snatched away in this cruel, barbaric manner, makes me feel capital punishment is not enough for the sick, depraved culprit who did this to her."
