Swara Bhasker and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub Quote Their Film Raanjhanaa's Reference to Condemn Violence at Anti-CAA Protests in UP

The actors who worked with each other in 2013's popular film Raanjhanaa, have now found a reference from the movie to comment on the ongoing issue.

As the Anti-CAA protests rage on across India, it's not just the students and regular citizens but also celebrities who are openly voicing their opinions and taking a bold stand. Even as some of the biggest faces in the industry today maintain their silence, it is actors like Swara Bhasker and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub who haven't batted an eyelid when it comes to calling out the police action during the Jamia Millia Islamia University protests or the current situation in UP. As several people across the country have taken to streets to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Many student protests are reportedly being met with violence and preventive detentions in UP. Condemning these acts of violence and standing in solidarity with the students, Swara and Zeeshan referenced their film as they were snapped holding a placard which read, "Hum Bindiya Benarasi, hum Murari Benarasi. Hum Zoya-Kundan ko khoj rahe hai, jo UP se pyaar mein nahi, UP police ki maar kha kar gaayab hai."

In the Anand L Rai directorial, Swara and Zeeshan played the role of Bindiya and Murari whereas Sonam and Dhanush essayed the role of Zoya and Kundan. A group of film industry people, including Anurag Kashyap and Aparna Sen, on Thursday, asked for an independent judicial probe into the violence against anti-CAA protesters in Uttar Pradesh. The appeal to courts was read out at a press conference by actors Swara Bhasker and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
