Sunny Deol, what pops up in your head the moment you hear that name? The pump scene from Gadar? Well, you can't be more wrong. You must have heard the Dhai kilo ka haath reference every time he pops up on the Television screen, but do you know which film it is from and why it is iconic? Sunny Deol is more than just the yelling, screaming do-gooder with an iron-fist. He is one of the best actors Indian cinema has ever seen and to prove our point, we recommend these five films that you must watch. Sunny Deol Shares a Family-Like Bond with ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ Unit; Recalls Exploring Himachal, Living in a Tent and More
Damini (1993)
The list has to begin with Damini even when Sunny Deol appears post interval. Rajkumar Santoshi's this film is anyway iconic for the way it deals with rape and its consequences with ample dose of 90s histrionics. But the way he takes over the film is simply ingenious. This is the film where the dhai kilo haath became threatening and why Sunny's rant about Tareek pe tareek tugged your heartstrings. If you haven't watched this, don't call yourself a Bollywood fan. Oh, btw, Sunny won the National Award For Best Supporting Actor for this.
Ghayal (1990)
Balwant Rai ke kutto... heard this? Yup, this is the movie where Sunny threatened the villain with those words and more. Slang? yea well, 90s was like that, nobody cared how it was 'impacting impressionable minds' then. But that's not the point here. Ghayal is a revenge drama where Sunny sets out to kill Balwant Rai who murdered his brother. It's scary when Deol gets angry and Ghayal has him in that mode for the better part of the film. He makes you feel the heat of his anger in this movie, hence it's a must watch. Not surprising that he picked a jury award at the National Film Awards.
Ghatak (1996)
It might seem that Ghayal and Ghatak are made of the same fabric but Sunny Deol in Ghatak wasn't just an angry 'Avenger'. He is a man whose temper is an issue and when his ailing father, played amazingly good by Amrish Puri, dies, he fails to keep it in. Ghatak has those rare moments of vulnerable Sunny that we haven't seen in his movies. He has always been this strong action man, but those moments made him seem human on screen.
Arjun (1985)
It's very important for you people to know about a young Sunny Deol and his career choices like Arjun. A film on unemployed youths who go wayward for the want of a decent job is all of us. The film is relatable even today. Sunny played a graduate and mirrored the sentiments of the unemployed youth so well, it will give you shivers. You can actually feel his pain and angst.
Betaab (1983)
That's where it all began. Sunny Deol had debuted as a romantic hero but ended up becoming the biggest action superstar with a purpose. Betaab will always be special because when Sunny falls in love on screen, he becomes this cute child-like person trying hard not to blush. So if you only remember him as an action man, do watch Betaab. If you don't fall in love with him, we will be deeply concerned about you.
