If you are aware of the works of US-returned director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, you would have knowledge of their quirky sense of humour and witty writing. They have directed cult films like 99, Shor In The City and Go Goa Gone, that stand out from the rest of the films for taking the road less traversed. With Stree, the duo had passed the baton of direction to Amar Kaushik, while turning first-time producers themselves. However, they have also written the film, thereby given Stree that much need-wit in its humour.
Stree is a horror comedy that stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor with an excellent supporting cast in Pankaj Tripathi, Aparashakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee and Atul Srivastava. If you haven't read out review yet, the movie has made a nice balance of laughs and scares, though it is the humour that appealed to us the most. In this special feature, we look at the five best moments of witty humour in the film that is guaranteed to make you go ROFL!
Sex Education Talk
In an embarrassing moment for the lead Vicky (Rajkummar Rao), his father (a hilarious Atul Srivastava) catches him paying a sex worker on behalf of his abducted friend (who gets taken away by the Stree) and mistakenly thinks that his son was the one who cavorted with the lady. This leads to one of the most awkward, hilarious sex ed talks we have seen in a Hindi movie, that discusses 'friendship' and ends with 'swayamseva'.
Mission Impossible tune
When Vicky's mysterious crush asks him to bring some bizarre date gifts like a lizard's tail and the hair of a white cat, his friend Bittu (Aparashakti Khurana, too damn good) tells him that it a Mission Impossible task. Cue, a different version of the MI tune being playing in the background, while Vicky sets to his task.
Yes Means Yes
If you have any doubts about how awesome an actor Pankaj Tripathi is (if you have seen Newton, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Gurgaon - you won't have this doubt), watch Stree for this actor's impeccable comic timing. He was hilarious in his intro scene, but the one that gets the best applause comes much later in the film. Vicky, Bittu and Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi) go into the ruins to find their missing friend. When they come across Stree, the friends are scared about being forcibly taken away by the entity. Rudra then jumps into a rant about how the entity is not like men who carry away victims without a warning (she calls them thrice and only kidnaps them when they respond to her calls), ending with a subversive take on Amitabh Bachchan's popular dialogue from PINK. Brilliant!
Amol Palekar = Baahubali?
Aparashakti Khurana has some of the best lines in the film. When his meek friend gets possessed by the ghost and manhandles everyone in the vicinity, Bittu has the best reaction to the situation - 'yeh to Amol Palekar se Baahubali ban gaya.'
Shah Rukh Khan
This scene would have been more awesome if it was not spoiled in the trailer. In the climax, when Stree catches hold of Vicky, Shraddha's character asks him to look into her eyes with love. With great difficulty and awkwardness, Vicky tries to do so by aping SRK's famous expression and hand gestures!
