It's official! Despite not having any A-list stars in its lead cast, Stree 2 has made box office history by entering the INR 600 crore club after its sixth weekend in India. The horror-comedy has amassed INR 604 crore at the time of writing. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has also declared Stree 2 the first Hindi film to achieve this milestone, although Atlee's Jawan had reached a similar feat just a year ago. So, what's the difference? ‘Stree 2’ Box Office Collection Day 39: Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Film Creates History, Surpasses INR 600 Crore Mark in India.

Taran Adarsh isn't the only trade analyst making this claim; other prominent analysts share the same opinion. But are these experts, who celebrated Jawan's box office triumphs in 2023, now overlooking the massive Shah Rukh Khan-Nayanthara-Deepika Padukone blockbuster? Or are they justified in calling Stree 2 the first "Hindi" film to do so?

In a way, they're right, but their claim is also somewhat misleading, as it underplays Jawan's performance. No disrespect to the makers of Stree 2, though; their achievement is incredible, and it's fair to say that Stree 2 is more profitable than Jawan when comparing the two.

Taran Adarsh's Post on 'Stree 2' Entering INR 600 Crore Club

The Box Office Dynamics of 'Stree 2'

Stree 2, directed by Amar Kaushik, stars Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Abhishek Banerjee, Aparshakti Khurana, and Pankaj Tripathi. The film also features cameos by Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, and Tamannaah Bhatia. It’s the fourth entry in the Maddock Supernatural Universe and a direct sequel to the 2018 hit Stree. Released in theatres on August 15, 2024, Stree 2 opened to packed cinemas, overshadowing its competitors Khel Khel Mein (also starring Akshay Kumar) and Vedaa (featuring Abhishek Banerjee and Tamannaah Bhatia). ‘Stree 2’ Movie Review: A Stellar Rajkummar Rao and a ‘Massy’ Shraddha Kapoor Are Electrifying Together in This ‘Laughs & Spooks’-Packed Sequel.

Stree 2 has only been released in Hindi across India, making its collections from a single-language release. This is why trade experts can claim it as the first "Hindi" film to earn INR 600 crore domestically. Stree 2 continues to draw audiences, bolstered by the fact that there were no major Hindi releases throughout September. ‘Stree 2’ Ending and Post-Credit Scenes Explained: Decoding How Akshay Kumar-Varun Dhawan’s Cameos Set Up ‘Stree 3’ and ‘Vampires of Vijay Nagar’ in Maddock Supernatural Universe.

The Box Office Dynamics of 'Jawan'

Jawan is an action-packed entertainer, directed by Atlee in his Bollywood debut and produced by Shah Rukh Khan, who also plays a dual role in the film. The cast includes Nayanthara, Deepika Padukone, Priyamani Raj, Ridhi Dogra, and Vijay Sethupathi. According to Bollywood Hungama, Jawan collected INR 643.87 crore in India, becoming the first Bollywood film to cross the INR 600 crore mark. However, there's a key difference - Jawan was released in multiple languages: Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, with the latter two being dubbed versions. The Hindi version alone netted INR 584 crore domestically, while the total Indian collection, including other languages, reached INR 643.87 crore.

This is why trade analysts claim Stree 2 is the first "Hindi" film to enter the INR 600 crore club, while Jawan remains the first Bollywood film to achieve this milestone. The argument lies in the technicality - Jawan is still primarily a Hindi film—but both are clear winners. Moreover, with a reported budget of INR 100 crore, Stree 2 is more profitable than Jawan (which had a budget of INR 300 crore) when only domestic collections are considered. ‘Stree 2’ Box Office Verdict – Hit or Flop: 5 Lessons To Learn From Blockbuster Run of Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor’s Movie.

Globally, however, Jawan is far ahead of Stree 2. While Stree 2 grossed INR 847.66 crore worldwide, Jawan brought in INR 1148.32 crore. Aamir Khan's 2016 blockbuster Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, still holds the record for the highest-grossing Indian film overseas, with reported earnings of INR 1968.03 crore. Jawan is the second-highest, with Stree 2 currently ranked seventh.
