Bollywood is struck with the most tragic news – the shocking demise of evergreen actress Sridevi. On February 24, 2018, a date that will definitely go down as one of the dark days in Indian cinema, Sridevi passed away. Famously called the ageless diva, Sridevi was 54 at the time of her death. Sridevi succumbed to her death after a massive cardiac arrest in Dubai. Yes, the actress whose songs we danced to, whose dialogues we cannot stop parroting is no more. It kills us to think that the superstar actress who gave a string of iconic songs such as Hawa Hawai from Mr. India, Main Teri Dushman from Nagina or Na Jaane Kahan Se from Chaalbaaz is dead! Words will never be enough to describe this hollowness our hearts feel at the moment.
Sridevi, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi had gone to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah's wedding. What has ripped her hearts apart is the thought of actress’ elder daughter, Jhanvi Kapoor who did not get to see her, meet her mother alive one last time. Jhanvi had stayed back in Mumbai due to her shooting schedule of Bollywood debut movie, Dhadak, about which even Sridevi was very pumped up about. A true superstar in her own right, Sridevi was among the first actresses to get the title of ‘superstar’ as she broke the dominance of male stars in the industry. She was beautiful, talented, stylish and graceful. Today, we take a look at few songs of Sridevi which will remain in our hearts forever.
1. Mere Haathon Mein - Chandni
Who can forget Sridevi as no-nonsense journalist Seema from 1987 cult film Mr. India. Her performance in Hawa Hawai song not only was a major highlight of the movie but also found a special place in Hindi cinema for years to come. The song which is still popular today saw Sridevi in not only a glamorous avatar but also display her comic timings. The song sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy went onto become one of the unforgettable dance numbers of Sridevi and in fact, earned her the name ‘Hawa Hawai’. Please come back, Sridevi.
2. Hawa Hawai - Mr. India
All the Nagin craze that we see on Indian television is due to one and only, Sridevi. She first featured in 1986 classic movie Nagina as the revenge-seeking shape-shifting serpent. The song Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar had Sridevi dancing her heart out. From her iconic white lehenga to light lenses, everything remains etched in our memory.
3. Main Teri Dushman - Nagina
Just imagine the combination of beautiful Sridevi in Yash Chopra’s love tale. That was 1989 blockbuster Chandni. Sridevi was an epitome of beauty, grace and sweet innocence in the film especially the song Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau Chudiyan Hain. The song has Sridevi performing at a friend’s wedding as the film’s hero Rishi Kapoor watches her. Not only Rishi but all of us were left mesmerized by Sridevi’s charming persona, dancing skills and attractive expressions.
It is heart-breaking to realize the veteran actress is not anymore. Just a week ago, we saw her depart for Dubai hand-in-hand with her daughter Khushi. The duo posed for stylish pictures at the wedding. She looked as gorgeous as ever and in a matter of bitter hours, the country lost one of its most influential personality. At 54, Sridevi is gone too soon and we are left with lumps in our throats. The void created by her death shall never be filled again.
