Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar come together for the first time in this week's release, Sonchiriya. The movie marks the fourth directorial of the extremely talented Abhishek Chaubey. Chaubey is known for making well-reviewed and appreciated films like Ishqiya, Dedh Ishqiya and Udta Punjab. A protege of director Vishal Bharadwaj, Abhishek Chauby's works look for that balance in being a gritty drama, social thriller, laced with black humour. Sonchiriya: 5 Popular Dacoit Movies of Bollywood You Should Not Miss Out on Before Watching the Sushant Singh Rajput-Starrer.

For Sonchiriya, Abhishek Chaubey goes to the ravines and Chambal and talks about the lives of the dacoits there. The dacoits, who are now known as rebels, had been a staple part of the Bollywood cinema in the '70s and '80s, with movies like Sholay, Mera Gaon Mera Desh and Dacait proving to be big hits. In this century, while the genre is a rare idea that film-makers follow, Irrfan Khan got a National Award for his performance in Paan Singh Tomar, based on the life and death of former Olympian turned dacoit. With Chaubey's Sonchiriya, the genre is all set for a revival.

Cast

Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee and Ranvir Shorey play dacoits of Chambal in the film. Bhumi Pednekar plays a woman, protecting a child with her, that the gang comes during an encounter. Ashutosh Rana plays a police officer who has a vendetta against these gangs.

Story

The plot is about the lives of these gangs in the ravines of Chambal, who prefers to call themselves rebels of the society rather than robbers. When a gang meets a mysterious girl with a dark past, their lives change forever.

Music

Box Office Prediction

Sonchiriya is not a movie that is an instant crowd-puller. The movie has been getting good early reviews, so hope that it pulls up audiences over the weekend based on the positive word of mouth campaign. This is what trade expert Girish Johar had told Indian Express, "Sonchiriya looks like a niche, rustic and a raw film and is not a mass-action drama. Though its trailer was much-talked about, the awareness level around the film is on the lower side. Also, it has no songs. So, the film will be backing on word of mouth. It will not be the frontrunner, but it can surely catch up over the weekend. I peg the film somewhere around Rs 1.5 crore."

Movie Review

Times of India and Cineblitz have given positive reviews for the film. Sonchiriya also got a standing ovation at MAMI where it was screened. As for our review, do watch out for this space as it will be uploaded soon here.
