In what is perhaps the longest trailer I’ve ever seen, the Singham Again trailer by Rohit Shetty almost hits the five-minute mark, missing it by just two seconds. A star-studded affair, Singham Again is the fifth movie in Shetty's cop universe, expanding the cast while revisiting old hits and gags. The trailer, which dropped on October 7, feels like a condensed version of the entire film, revealing the main plot, all the hero introduction scenes, and even the climactic battle, which serves as Singham Again’s "Avengers" moment. So, how is the trailer? ‘Singham Again’ Trailer: Rohit Shetty Brings ‘Ramayan’ To Cop Universe in This Battle Between Ajay Devgn’s ‘Vanarsena’ and Arjun Kapoor’s ‘Raavan’ (Watch Video)
To appeal to the franchise’s Hindu fan base, Ramayana is the core theme of Singham Again. The references are quite heavy-handed, with the main cast members assigned Ramayana characters, the plot heavily inspired by the epic, and even the events paralleling it. Which makes us wonder: why is Nitesh Tiwari even bothering to make Ramayan with Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi?
ICYMI, Here’s the Trailer of 'Ramayan'... Oops, sorry... 'Singham Again':
Observations From 'Singham Again' Trailer - Easter Eggs, Confusing Plot Elements, and Possible Spoilers
1. Singham Has a Teenage Son?
Although Ajay Devgn’s Bajirao Singham and Kareena Kapoor’s Avni Kamat were paired together in Singham Returns back in 2014, they are now shown as a married couple, and—surprise—they have a teenage son! As Rajinikanth says in 2.0, it's a 'Medical Miracle'!
2. 'Singham Again' Goes 'Delhi-6'
Avni is directing a Ramayana play whose moments are shown to parallel the plot events of Singham Again. This was an idea we had seen earlier in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi-6, where the events of the Ramlila run parallel to the film's storyline. The Hindu sentiments in Singham Again are clearly aimed at appealing to the majority. Or perhaps Rohit Shetty is overcompensating for the right-wing criticism he faced over a scene in Sooryavanshi where Muslims were shown protecting a Hindu idol? If that's not enough, Bajirao Singham also invokes Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maratha pride in another scene to make sure Singham Again gets picked up in Maharashtra. ‘Singham Again’ Trailer Review: Netizens Praise Ajay Devgn’s Actioner for Taking Inspiration From ‘Ramayan’; Check Out Their Reactions.
3. Deepika Padukone as Maa Shakti?
The trailer assigns all the main characters roles from Ramayana, but Deepika Padukone’s character is unclear. It seems she is Maa Shakti, judging by the tiger insignia on her car when she is seen shooting. But what is Maa Durga doing with Lord Ram’s vanarsena? Also, is it just me, or does Deepika look awkward trying to deliver massy punchlines?
4. Tiger Shroff as a Mute Lakshman?
Did you notice that Tiger Shroff’s character has no dialogue in the trailer? Is he playing a mute cop?
5. Akshay Kumar as Garuda, Not Jatayu
At first glance, it seemed like Akshay Kumar, who makes an aerial entry, would be the Jatayu of this Ramayana adaptation. Considering Jatayu’s fate, we were worried for Sooryavanshi. However, based on online chatter, it appears that Akshay Kumar is playing the protective Garuda to Ajay Devgn’s Ram. Which also raises the question...
6. Is Daya the Jatayu?
Poor Dayanand Shetty… No matter what role he takes, he can’t escape the "Daya, Darwaza Tod" joke from his CID days. The same joke was made in Singham Returns, where he was part of Singham’s team. In the Singham Again trailer, the "Darwaza Tod" scene shows him attempting to rescue Kareena Kapoor’s character from being kidnapped. Does this mean he’s the Jatayu of the story, destined to be killed by Arjun Kapoor’s antagonist? Will he be the Phil Coulson of Rohit Shetty's Police Avengers?
7. What Is Shweta Tiwari’s Role?
The ageless Shweta Tiwari is briefly seen twice in the trailer—once walking behind Ajay Devgn’s Singham and later in a clearer shot. Which Ramayana character is she portraying? Vibhishan?
8. Singham Brings in the ‘Machine Gun’ Moment
The ‘machine gun’ trope is getting tiresome. Kaithi nailed it, KGF Chapter 2 did it, Vikram used it, Animal featured it... and Ajay Devgn even tried it in his Kaithi remake, Bholaa. But that hasn’t stopped Rohit Shetty from giving Devgn another machine gun moment in Singham Again.
9. Who Is Deepika Padukone Crying Over in This Scene?
In one scene, Deepika Padukone’s Shakti Shetty is seen grieving over someone, before being consoled by Ajay Devgn’s Singham. At first, we thought it was Daya, but he’s visible in the background of the following scene. There are several burning pyres, so we wonder if these are the bodies of cops killed by Arjun Kapoor’s antagonist at the police station.
10. The Tired, Repetitive Jokes
Ranveer Singh’s lines in the trailer are rehashed jokes from Sooryavanshi, as is his banter with Akshay Kumar’s character, where he teases him about his landing style. And it’s not just the jokes...
11. The ‘Avengers’ Moment Is Also Recycled
The scene where all the cops surround a distressed Kareena Kapoor Khan and start shooting is a repeat of a similar scene from Sooryavanshi, only this time there are more cops. As they say, if it worked once, try, try, and try again—even if it risks putting the audience to sleep.
