It is not easy to make a movie about a person whose life has been shrouded in controversies, more so when the man happens to be Sanjay Dutt. But his good friend and ace film-maker, Rajkumar Hirani, was up for the challenge and he had the advantage of casting the really talented Ranbir Kapoor in the lead for Sanju. But the question is how close will the movie resemble Sanjay Dutt's life. Also, whether it will fall afoul of Censor Board when presented for certification.
Well, it looks like Sanju has passed the CBFC test, as the Board members have cleared the movie with just one cut, as per an article by Subhash K Jha in Masala.com. The only scene that got the axe was the toilet overflowing scene which we saw in the trailer. The scene landed in controversy when a complaint was filed with the Censor Board that such scenes showed the jail in a poor light. But the Board had cut the scene for a different reason altogether, the reason being for 'aesthetic reasons'.
Moreover, the report also mentions that Sanju portrays Sanjay Dutt in a very positive light and he is shown as a victim of circumstances. But the Board members had no issue with that. One of the members spoke to the senior journalist and revealed, "There are reports that the censor board members objected to Mr Sanjay Dutt’s portrayal in the film in a positive light. We are not assigned to judge a film’s morality. We evaluated the film in its totality and found nothing objectionable barring fleeting shots and dialogues here and there."
While we are a bit surprised by the apparent white-washing of Sanjay Dutt's character in the movie, we are also glad that Sanju will get a smooth release on June 29. The movie also stars Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Anushka Sharma, Vicky Kaushal, Jim Sarbh and Sonam Kapoor.
So what do you make of Sanju's Censor Board observations? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. (with inputs from Subhash K Jha).
