Ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee had made quite a controversial remark recently when he spoke at the Harvard India Conference. During his talk, he was asked a question on difficulties a woman has to face when she is wearing a saree. In his reply, he said, "I think, if you tell me that you do not know how to wear a saree, I would say shame on you. It’s a part of your culture, (you) need to stand up for it.” After his remark, feminists especially had a lot to say to the designer. He received a lot of flak on social media and has now issued an apology for his remarks.

He has pointed out the word 'shame' was not used to disrespect women in any way. To justify himself he has written an open letter on his Instagram. Talking about that sentence which got heavily criticised he called it an "unfortunate series of events." He tried to bring to notice the stereotype that exists about women who wear sarees. Women who wear sarees are considered older and referred to as 'Auntyji' and even addressed the body shaming that goes along with it. But it is his own remark which comes as regressive.

Take a look at Sabyasachi's open letters:

Sabyasachi is considered an epitome of traditional wear. While the who's who of Bollywood rely on his collections for their best ocassions, there is another lot who dream of owning at least one of his collection. His sarees are famous for their extravagance along with a class. So when he made such a statement it came as a shocker. But the designer has now cleared his stance on what he said.
