Ranveer Singh’s BIGGEST Box Office Openers: Gully Boy Beats Padmaavat to Grab the Second Spot, Simmba Still on Top
After performing exceedingly well on day 1, Gully Boy has become Ranveer's second biggest opener.
Professionally, Ranveer Singh is currently making all the right moves. Last year, the talented actor tasted box office success with two films – Padmaavat and Simmba. And now the 33-year-old has kicked off 2019 on a good note with his latest release Gully Boy. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the musical drama stars Ranveer alongside Alia Bhatt for the very first time and that’s one big reason why everyone, including us, was looking forward to the film. After impressing the critics big time, Gully Boy hit the theatres yesterday and took a massive opening in Mumbai and Pune. Gully Boy Box Office Collection Day 1: Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt's Film off to a Brilliant Start, Rakes in Rs 19.40 Crore.
In fact, the film opened far better than Padmaavat and Simmba in the Mumbai circuit; however, in other places Gully Boy couldn’t replicate the same response. And hence it failed to become Ranveer’s biggest opener but only by a slight margin which is actually commendable. I say so because Gully Boy isn't a typical Bollywood masala movie like Simmba which catered to a much wider audience across India. Also, Zoya’s film is devoid of over-the-top action and hasn’t been shot in beautiful locales of some European country.
In fact, Gully Boy is hard to slot in any category because it’s the first mainstream Bollywood film which revolves around rap music. So taking that into consideration and the fact that the film is basically Mumbai-centric, Gully Boy has done exceptionally well for itself on the first day. By minting Rs 19.40 crore, the film has even smashed the opening day record of Ranveer’s period drama Padmaavat and has become his second highest box office opener to date. While Simmba is sitting comfortably at the top with Rs 20.72 crore, Gully Boy is second on the list whereas Padmaavat which earned Rs 19 crore on day 1 is now on the third spot. The other two films that round up the top 5 openers for Ranveer are Gunday (Rs 16.12 crore) and Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela (Rs 16 crore) respectively.
