Dipika Chikhlia, the beloved face behind Sita in Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, has recently voiced her heartfelt concerns about the surge of modern adaptations of the timeless epic. In a candid interview, she expressed her disapproval of filmmakers like Nitesh Tiwari taking on the Ramayana anew, particularly with stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi. For Chikhlia, it's not just about protecting a story; it's safeguarding its very soul.
She worries that these reinterpretations could water down the profound impact and spiritual depth that the Ramayan embodies, fearing they might lose sight of its essence amidst flashy visuals and contemporary twists. Dipika Chikhlia Not Happy With Remake Of Nitesh Tiwari, Ranbir Kapoor's Ramayana
The actress-turned-politician told India Today, “Honestly, I am quite disillusioned by people who keep making Ramayana because I don’t think you should be doing it. People are making a mess of it. I don’t think people should be making Ramayana again and again because every time they make it, they want to bring in something new; a new story, a new angle, a new look.” She added, “One should not tamper around with religious texts. I don’t think one should be doing it and just leave it aside. Just don’t do this. There are so many stories that you can talk about besides Ramayana. Speak about a lot of freedom fighters. There’s so much that one can talk about; unsung heroes who were valiant in history for freedom. Why only Ramayana?”
She later highlighted her stance by referencing Om Raut’s film Adipurush, which faced criticism for its portrayal of Hindu deities. She pointed out the example of Kriti Sanon being clad in a pink satin saree in the movie, and how Saif's portrayal of Ravana was given a different look for the sake of creative innovation. However, she expressed concern that such creative liberties might inadvertently dilute the essence of the Ramayana, as these departures could distract from the core values and messages of the epic.
