The festival of Raksha Bandhan will be observed on August 19, 2024 in India and abroad. On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, sisters tie a special thread on the wrist of their brothers, seeking the promise of protection and security. It has originated from the relationship of Lord Krishna and Draupadi, as per the Mahabharata, who became brother and sister after she tied a piece of cloth on his bleeding finger and he protected her thereon. Rakhi falls on the occasion of Shravan Purnima, also known as Rakhi Purnima. Bollywood has celebrated Raksha Bandhan in many of its films. Here's a look at some.
‘Sarbjit’
Randeep Hooda and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played brother and sister in Sarbjit (2016). The film is known for the amazing physical transformation that Randeep Hooda underwent to get into the skin of the character. It was based on the life of Sarabjit Singh who was sentenced to death by Pakistan for being an alleged Indian spy and causing the Lahore and Faisalabad bomb blasts in 1990. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan essayed the role of Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur who fights for his innocence. While the movie recovered its budget, it was not a blockbuster. But Aishwarya and Randeep are known for their compelling performance in the film.

‘Dil Dhadakne Do’
Hands down, this is one of the best urban films on the sibling bond. Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra managed to play husband-wife in Bajirao Mastani, and brother-sister in this Zoya Akhtar movie in the same year (2015) with equal finesse. While Priyanka Chopra was the go-getter Ayesha Mehra, Ranveer played the rebellious and laidback Kabir to perfectlion. Dil Dhadakne Do, with all its glam, Delhi humour and cool quotient, is a movie that captures the essence of a sibling relationship.

'My Brother...Nikhil'
Onir's film My Brother...Nikhil (2005) was a sensitive tale based on the life of former Goa swimming champion, Dominic D'Souza. Sanjay Suri played Nikhil Kapoor, a swimming champ who is removed from the team after testing HIV positive. He is later kept in isolation by Goa Public Health Act authorities. After he is thrown out of his home by his parents, and ostracised by society, the only one in support is his sister, Anamika (Juhi Chawla). It is one of the best onscreen performances of the '90s actress.

‘Fiza’
Karisma Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan were in fine form in Fiza, directed by film critic Khalid Mohamed. The 2000 movie was about a sister, Fiza (Karisma Kapoor) who is on the hunt for her brother, Amaan (Hrithik Roshan) after he disappears post the 1993 Bombay Bomb Blasts and Riots. When she finally finds him, she discovers that he is now a terrorist. The crime thriller movie is a good watch till date.
