On August 31, we had two big movies in Bollywood coming out on Friday and competing with each other at the box office. There is Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se, the third instalment of the YPD franchise. Starring the three Deols, Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby, in the lead, Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se has Kriti Kharbanda as the sole female lead. Shatrughan Sinha, Salman Khan, Rekha and Sonakshi Sinha also have cameos in the film. The movie is directed by Navaniat Singh.
Then there is Stree, a horror comedy, that is written by Go Goa Gone duo Raj & DK, while directed by Amar Kaushik. Stree stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead, while Pankaj Tripathi, Aparashakti Khurana and Abhishek Banerjee are in the supporting cast. Horror comedy is a genre, less explored by Bollywood, so Stree is a far riskier proposition than Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se.
However, when it comes to box office and critical acclaim it is Stree that takes the lead over the Deols' family comedy. Let's talk about the box office first.
Box Office
While the official figures are not out yet, it is a certainty that Stree has taken the lead over YPDPS. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweets, "Boxoffice can be most unpredictable, but that’s the beauty of this business... #Stree takes a bigger start than the bigger-in-cast #YamlaPaglaDeewanaPhirSe... Proves, phir se [yet again], Fridays can be sooo unpredictable!"
Critical acclaim
Even when it comes to winning over the critics, Stree had better reviews than Yamla..., as the former managed to elicit more chuckles from the reviewers than the Deols.

In short, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor steal the show from the might of the Deols in the opening day match. However, a proper idea of the business would be clearer when the first weekend is over!
