Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor's horror comedy Stree opened to positive reviews from critics as well as audience. The film raked in Rs 6.82 crore on its opening day and touched double digits on Saturday, minting Rs 10.87 crore. Owing to the positive word of mouth, Rajkummar's film takes the weekend's grand total to 17.69 crore. The film is a unique genre horror-comedy, which has not been explored much in our country. Stree is the perfect blend of funny and scary; Rajkummar's extraordinary performance will leave you in splits, while the horror elements in the film will leave you spooked.
Speaking of Stree's climax scene, it seemed like there is a slight chance of the film to have a sequel. Talking about it, Producer Dinesh Vijan, in a statement to DNA, said, "The film’s last two shots actually set up the sequel. When you watch the movie, you will understand that we intentionally had an open ending." Confirming further, he added, "Stree 2 will start off from there and explain those shots. We have written it as a franchise, so there will be a sequel. We are happy that the confidence in the content has paid off."
Talking about the sequel, Vijan went on to say that it will get into the detailing of Shraddha Kapoor’s character and reveal the backstory. He told the daily, "Along with Shraddha’s backstory, a few other pertinent questions will be answered in the second instalment. The cast will be retained, but there will be new inclusions too. Predominantly, it will still be driven by Raj and Shraddha’s characters." Vijan further added that the film will go on floors by the end of 2019. Speaking to the publication, he said, "We hope to go on floors with Stree 2 by the end of 2019. And hopefully, in two years, we will be ready with it."
Stree marks the directorial debut of Amar Kaushik. Written by Raj & DK, the film is inspired by the "ridiculously true phenomenon" of Nale Ba. Stree tells the (fictional) story of a vengeful female spirit, who haunts the streets of Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh during the days of the puja, preying on men. As no man is safe, the people of Chanderi paint the words 'O stree, kal aana' on the walls of their respective houses to ward 'Stree' off. Bankrolled by Dinesh Vijan, Krishna DK, Raj Nidimoru, Stree also stars Pankaj Tripathi in a pivotal role. Watch this space for further updates.
