2019 is the year where general assembly elections are being held in the country, and we are having five movies coming out this year that is either in favour of the ruling BJP party or are alleged by the opposition party (Indian National Congress) of being an attack on them. Movies like The Accidental Prime Minister and Thackeray have already created enough waves with their trailers and have got the attention of the country to get a good initial at the box office.
So in this feature, let's look at the five movies that will come out this year that are bound to get politically polarising reactions.
The Accidental Prime Minister
Based on the book by Sanjay Baru, the movie is about Baru's retelling of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's tenure. while the former served as a media advisor for the office. The trailer made one thing quite evident - it wants to paint Singh as a sorry figure caught in the political machinations of the Gandhi family. Also, Singh is played by Anupam Kher who is an out and out BJP supporter.
Uri: The Surgical Strike
On the same day that The Accidental Prime Minister arrives, that is January 11, also comes this war drama. Based on the surgical strike carried out by India after the 2016 terrorist attack in Uri, Kashmir, the Vicky Kaushal and Paresh Rawal is a fictional retelling of the military operation, that many in Opposition are still accusing the government of fabricating just to show that they did something.
Thackeray
Nawazudddin Siddiqui stars as the late Shiv Sena supremo in his biopic, that is backed by MP Sanjay Raut, who has also written the film. The trailers have made it evident that it is a movie that glorifies the legacy of Balasaheb, including his scathing attacks on South Indians and Muslims, and his controversial role in the 1993 Bombay Riots. The movie will release on January 25.
The Tashkent Files
Film-maker and Censor Board official, Vivek Agnihotri is making a film that is based around the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri. Shastriji has passed away in 1966 after signing the Tashkent declaration with Pakistan, with many speculating that he was not too happy with the pact. Considering that Agnihotri is having an affiliation towards the ruling party, we expect some very serious allegations towards the Congress in the film. The release date is not confirmed yet.
PM Narendra Modi
For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, we are having a biopic made on a Prime Minister while he is serving his tenure. The Modi biopic is being directed by Omung Kumar of Mary Kom and Sarabjit fame. Vivek Oberoi, who now goes by the name Vivekanand Oberoi, is essaying the lead role. The shoot of the film will begin in January and the makers will be looking to releasing the movie during the elections.
