Controversies surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat don't seem to end. In a fresh protest, members of Karni Sena created a ruckus outside the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) office on Friday morning. After the film certification body approved Deepika Padukone-starrer with U/A certificate, the sena headed by President Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi, announced a gherao outside CBFC’s office.
According to reports of ZEE News, Sukhdev in his statement said that the CBFC doesn't really know how to do its work. "The CBFC which has been running ever since the time of Britishers doesn't know how to work. From the past one and a half year, we have been talking peacefully but now it is time to take up the path of aggression,” he added.
Scores of protesters were seen outside the CBFC office in Mumbai. Soon after, they were detained by the city police. However, as the day progresses, thousands of members are expected to join in for the gherao, TV reports claim. The Karni Sena also have demanded the resignation of CBFC Chief Prasoon Joshi for clearing the film with minor cuts.
To recall, the Central Board of Film Certification made some modifications post a meeting with the filmmakers on December 28, 2017. The Board asked them to add disclaimers cautioning that they are not glorifying the practice of Sati. Apart from this, minor changes were made to the song ‘Ghoomar’. Not to forget, the title of the period drama was changed from ‘Padmavati’ to ‘Padmaavat’. However, the Karni Sena did not accept these changes and wants to stall the screenings of the cinema in all the states. As of now, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh have faced a ban on movie’s release. Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh in the lead and is slated to hit the screens on January 25.
