Omerta deals with the dark life of one of the most dangerous living men on Planet Earth - Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh. The dreaded terrorist, now incarcerated in a Pakistani jail, has been involved in some of the most deadly ploys like 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy, the killing of American journo Daniel Pearl and 2008 Mumbai attacks. Rajkummar Rao plays Sheikh on screen in the movie that is directed by his favourite film-maker Hansal Mehta.
Making a movie on Sheikh who is known for his hatred for India is bound to give sweat-beads to the Censor Board officials. Omerta was involved in a little tussle between the makers and the Board, postponing the release of the movie from April 20 to May 4. Now the makers have agreed to two cuts suggested by the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification), and the movie is finally ready for release.
One such scene happened to be where Rajkummar Rao goes nude at the start of the movie. While Rao is seen appearing shirtless in the final cut, apparently, he was supposed to go full monty in the scene. Speaking of this sequence, Hansal Mehta told Mumbai Mirror, "That scene was not intended for titillation. I would never do that. It depicts Omar Shaikh's violence and his state of mind before he embarked on one of his evil acts." Interestingly, Rajkummar Rao had gone nude for Hansal's earlier movie, Shahid, during one of the police torture scenes.
Another scene from Omerta that got the scissors was a scene where Rao as Sheikh was seen urinating when the National Anthem was being played. Definitely, something that would make the Board baulk! Mehta continued, "Some members of the CBFC got the essence of this scene but had to ask for it to be done away with because of the guidelines. It doesn't hamper the film's narrative in any way, so I had to accept it."
Thankfully, it was an amicable decision and didn't go as ugly as some of the other movies like Ravi Jadhav's Nude, Sanal Sasidharan's S Durga and even 2016's Udta Punjab. Omerta, which has won a lot of acclaim in the international film circuit, is releasing this Friday, along with Amitabh Bachchan - Rishi Kapoor's 102 Not Out.
