October Trailer: Is Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu's Surreal Love Story Inspired By This 2002 Spanish Movie?
October is scheduled to release on April 13.
So the trailer for October has come up, and as the makers and the stars of the movie had promised, it is quite an unusual movie to ever hit Bollywood in recent times. Going his previous works like Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe, Piku etc, it is stupid to expect something run-of-the-mill from director Shoojit Sircar, who is working with Varun Dhawan for the first time here. Banita Sandhu, known for her cute act in the Double Mint ad, is playing the female lead in this unusual love story.
Going by the trailer, we understand that both Varun and Banita are hotel management trainees who work in the same hotel, but are not in love with each other. However in an unfortunate twist of fate, Banita's character Shiuli ends up being comatose at a hospital, and Varun Dhawan, for some mysterious reason, forms a bond with her that changes his life forever. It is quite an unusual tale with some beautiful frames and has that touch of surrealism.
October, written by Juhi Chaturvedi, looks to be quite the original fare that Bollywood lacks these days. That said, we can't help but draw some shades with this 2002 Spanish movie, Hable Con Ella that was released in English as Talk To Her. The drama movie also deals with similar themes, however instead of one, here there are two comatose women in question, while two men close them reevaluate their relationship with these characters as well as themselves during their stay in the hospital.

Like October, there is also a sense of surrealism in the Spanish movie too. Talk to Her won over the critics and the box office that year, while also winning winning the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. While October may not be a direct rip-off, and we certainly do not hope that's the case, we can see where that thread of inspiration came from.
