Sonam Kapoor and her longtime boyfriend, Anand Ahuja, got married a few days back but we are still talking about it. Both of them have been dating for a long time before they decided to tie the knot and enter marital bliss. One of the first things that Sonam Kapoor did (apart from making heads turn at Cannes Film Festival 2018) is that she changed her name from Sonam Kapoor to Sonam Kapoor Ahuja right on the day of her marriage. This move of hers had drawn criticism from certain sections of her fans, who said this went against her image of being a feminist.
Speaking to DNA on this, Sonam Kapoor revealed that it was her choice and her in-laws never forced her to do so. She also mentions that even her husband has changed his name after marriage, but no one talks about that! She had said, "I’ve always maintained that I’m a feminist. I have a choice to change my name when I want to do it. The fact is that Kapoor is also my father’s surname. So, I chose to keep both. And just to be a part of our family, Anand has also changed his name. But nobody wrote about that! My husband or his family has not asked me to do anything. Likewise, he did it on his own. We anyway take our father’s names, so if we can give that respect to them, we can give the same respect to our husbands, too. It’s my personal choice and somebody judging me for it is ridiculous."
Well, the fact that Anand Ahuja has changed his name can be concluded on the basis that he has added an 'S' in his name as seen on his Instagram page. Which we guess is 'Sonam'!
Now that's a progressive move, isn't it? Sonam also talked about how marriage should never throw a spanner in her work. "People are still asking me these questions, which is sad. I don’t know if it’s changed that much. I know that Kajol, Dimple Kapadia, Nargis, Nutan and Waheeda Rehman have continued with their career post marriage. In fact, Madhuri (Dixit-Nene) did Devdas after tying the knot. But it’s still a long way to go. And we, as women, need to come together and be stronger. The choice shouldn’t be taken away. I hope to set an example by coming straight out of my wedding and doing what I do best," she concluded.
Sonam Kapoor will be seen next in Veere Di Wedding, that also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania. The movie is directed by Shashanka Ghosh and is produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor. Veere Di Wedding is scheduled to release on June 1.
