They just don't make anyone like Mehmood anyone. One of the most gifted comedians Indian cinema had ever seen, Mehmood can make you crack a smile with ease with his enthusiastic dialogue delivery and animated expressions. Having acted in more than 300 movies, Mehmood has performed as a leading man, a character artist and a comedian, though it is the last category where Mehmood achieved the most success. Mehmood had begun his acting career as a child artist in movies like KismetMehmood Death Anniversary: Lesser Known Facts About The King of Comedy

As an adult, Mehmood first appeared in serious, supporting roles in films like CID, Pyaasa et al. Soon, he began to gain fame for his funny antics and became a scene-stealer in movies like Bombay To Goa, Gumnaam, Sadhu Aur Shaitaan, Padosan etc. Even though it may sound offensive in recent times, Mehmood was very famous for playing characters with a faux Hyderabadi accent. In a career spanning four decades, Mehmood has gained 29 Filmfare nominations, with five wins.

Mehmood had also directed a few movies, mostly with him as the lead, like Kunwara Baap, Ginny Aur Johnny et al. These films are also known to have cameos from the big stars from that era, like Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Hema Malini, Rakesh Roshan, Vinod Khanna etc. The last film that he acted and directed before his sad demise in 2004 was the 1996 film Dushman Duniya Ka, that was the acting debut of his son Manzoor Ali. Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had cameos in the film. Is Shah Rukh Khan a ‘Lucky Charm’ When It Comes to Cameos? The Answer Is, Sadly, NO, and We Have Proof!

On the occasion of his 87th birth anniversary, we present 5 of the most hilarious scenes that Mehmood has given us.

Scaring The Wits Out of Om Prakash in Pyar Kiye Jaa

This particular sequence from the 1966 film Pyar Kiye Jaa is considered one of the funniest scenes in Bollywood.

Mehmood narrating a horror script, with appropriate sound effects and sense of suspense, brings the house down, enhanced further by the late Om Prakash's appropriately terrified expressions! Laughter guaranteed!

Bollywood's First Rap Battle in Padosan

Ranveer Singh and Siddhant Chaturvedi can take a hike! The original Gully Boy rap battle happened in this hilarious 1968 film. Mehmood, Sunil Dutt, Saira Banu and Kishore Kumar are top-notch in the romantic comedy. The highlight of the film is the "Chatur Naar" Song sequence.

While all the actors are excellent here (somewhat racially inappropriate too), special mention must also be given to RD Burman's score, lyrics by Rajendra Krishan and excellent singing by Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar.

Giving Gods Enough Headache in Sadhu Aur Shaitaan

Mehmood plays the lead in this 1969 film directed by A Bhimsingh. He plays a good-hearted cab driver in the movie, who finds himself in some very unusual situations involving a dead body. Some of the funniest portions in the film, which also includes cameos, involves a mythological play.

There are some very funny skits here where Mehmood plays a man who is accidentally brought to Yamlok, and is now insisting that he be returned to his original body that has been exhumed.

Giving A Weird Explanation of How Black Trumps Over White in Gumnaam

Sure, Mehmood's character in this mystery thriller, based on Agatha Christie's novel And Then There Was None..., may look offensive. But kudos to the actor to make it one of his most iconic characters.

One of the most remembered scenes in the film is when Helen's character, tired of his flirting, calls him black. His response is classic!

Falling Off the Bus in Bombay to Goa

Bombay to Goa is a comic gem where Mehmood plays the lead character, the conductor of the bus that plies between Bombay and Goa. The movie derives its humour from the assorted characters travelling in the bus, which includes an early appearance from Amitabh Bachchan and a cameo from Kishore Kumar.

Bombay to Goa is filled with enough situational humour, like when Mehmood's character tries to flirt with a pretty passenger, only for him to be pushed out of the bus by her mother. And the fact that the driver doesn't stop the bus, because the conductor usually keeps falling makes it all the more hilarious.

Wah Wah Productions in Andaz Apna Apna

Andaz Apna Apna, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, is an ageless classic featuring the best mirthful performances from its cast, that includes Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Paresh Rawal, Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, and Shakti Kapoor. Every scene, every dialogue in the film has become legendary.

Jagdeep and Mehmood, who were past their prime when the movie came out, lend memorable performances. While Jagdeep plays Prem (Salman Khan)'s hassled father, Mehmood is a riot as the fraud producer who gets a readymade victim in the dum Prem.
