Anurag Kashyap goes mushy for the first time in his career, with his upcoming movie, Manmarziyaan. Starring Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal in the lead, Manmaziyaan is a love triangle with shades of Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The trailer has been received with much applause on social media, and the songs from the film have also been appreciated. Interestingly, when the film was announced, none of the lead actors and the director were the first choices. Instead, it was to star Bhumi Pednekar, Ayushmann Khurrana and Dulquer Salmaan. Anurag Kashyap Birthday Special: Ranking All Bollywood Feature-Length Movies The Manmarziyaan Director Has Made From Worst to the Best.

Anyway, Manmarziyaan had its premiere at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The first reviews have been out, and Manmarziyaan has been in praise for its performances and the plot, though they have one common complaint - too many songs in the film. Check out what the reviews have been saying -

The Cinemaholic had a more positive review as it says, "One of the major issues Bollywood romantic films face is that makers don’t know how to end the film and are often caught wrong-footed. At one point, I felt ‘Manmarziyan’ is also going the same fateful route, but thankfully the final ten minutes of the film are actually its best (seemingly inspired from the Before series). Even though I would have preferred an open ending where the audiences are left wondering the fate of characters, I can understand why Kashyap decided to put a closure to the story — Indian audiences would have it no other way."

Outlook says, "Taapsee Pannu as Rumi is feisty and fiery, like what you've seen in the past in roles played by Preity Zinta, though on steroids. With her angst and anger management issues, Rumi is probably among the most atypical heroines to appear in a Hindi movie. Pannu gets into the skin of the character with plenty of fire and flair. Kaushal's Vicky is the warm body without too much intelligence or initiative. Bachchan's Bonnie is vanilla, and in a role reversal, is that caring, understanding, suffering, patient lover that we tend to associate with characters of the other gender."

Manmarziyaan will release in India on September 14.
