Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, which released last Friday on January 25, seems to be doing good business not just in India but in the overseas territories as well. We say so because the period drama that stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead has already surpassed the $ 2 million mark at the overseas box office. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to popular microblogging site Twitter a while back and revealed the good news. He tweeted, "#Manikarnika crosses $ 2 mn [â¹ 14.24 cr] from international markets [till 29 Jan 2019]... As for the domestic box office, Manikarnika has already crossed the Rs 50 crore mark and minted Rs 52.40 crore in India so far. Despite releasing alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Thackeray, the period war drama has had a good run at the ticket windows overall.
Interestingly, Kangana's film didn't open to rave reviews however her performance was praised by most critics. And that's one big reason why the historical biopic has managed to pull the crowd to the theatres. Our in house critic Sreeju Sudhakaran gave the film 2.5 stars out of 5 and wrote in his review, "Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi deserves to be praised for retelling an important chapter in history. Kangana Ranaut's performance will be a treat for her fans. Manikarnika would have attained greater heights, though, if there had been a tighter rein over the writing, the editing, the length and used the supporting cast in an effective way."
