Set in a storeyed chawl in Mumbai, Meezaan is a local ruffian who can't stand the 'outsider' family that came into his building. Fans of Tamil Cinema will be able to quickly point out that Malaal bears some heavy influences from the 2004 film, 7G Rainbow Colony. The movie starred Sonia Aggarwal and Ravi Krishna, and was directed by Selvaraghavan (Dhanush's brother). NGK New Poster: Suriya’s Mass Hero Look Unveiled on Director Selvaraghavan’s Birthday.

7G Rainbow Colony has a similar plot as Malaal - Ravi Krishna's character is a good-for-nothing fellow, who first fights and then falls for the new girl in the colony, played by Sonia Aggarwal. The girl tries to change the ways of his life, including making him more responsible. When the girl's family find out, they elope and this leads to certain tragic consequences. Knowing SLB's penchant for tragic love stories, expecting Malaal to go by the same route.

7G Rainbow Colony was a huge hit that year thanks to the freshness of its premise and its music. The movie was later remade into Kannada, Odia and Bengali, before now, presumably, making it way into Bollywood. Now all we need to hear from the makers of Malaal if the Bollywood film is an official remake of the Tamil movie.
