Not much has been divulged about the multi-starrer, Kalank, save for its star-cast and the fact that it is set before partition. The movie is directed by Abhishek Verman and stars Madhuri Dixit Nene, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjay Dutt, along with Kunal Kemmu. Kalank is believed to be a dream project of 15 years for producer Karan Johar. We have also seen videos of Varun Dhawan building his body for the movie, making us wonder if he plays a warrior in the film.

Now it looks like we have a little more insight on a couple of characters in the Kalank, if a report in Pinkvilla has to be believed. As per the report, a source close to the project revealed that Madhuri is playing a courtesan in the movie. If this is true, then this is her second role in a similar capacity after Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas, where Madhuri Dixit played Chandramukhi.

The source revealed to the publication, "Madhuri Dixit will be playing a courtesan in the movie which is a period drama. She is a trained Kathak dancer in the movie, who teaches others the dance form. Given her knowledge and mastery on dance, especially Kathak, this one is easy for her. Despite that, she is putting in 4-5 hours for the rehearsals. Currently, due to the promotions of Bucket List, she is slightly caught up. But once that gets done, she will be leaving no stone unturned for the movie." This collaborates with the earlier report that Madhuri's character will be some form of a dance teacher to Alia Bhatt's.

So what about the comparisons with Devdas? "Though Madhuri Dixit's character in Devdas was of a courtesan, it is very different from what she has in Kalank. The angle to this is different and hence it won't be anything like Chandramukhi," the source continued.

So what about Sanjay Dutt's character? The website quotes another source revealing that Sanjay Dutt would be playing a Raja in Kalank. That source says, "While Madhuri Dixit plays this character, Sanjay Dutt portrays the role of a Raja. But at this moment, not much can be revealed about his character. Only when he begins shooting, things will be slightly clearer. Right now, the director is shooting with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha."

The shooting for Kalank is already underway and the movie is expected to release on April 19, 2019.
