Luv Ki Arrange Marriage Movie Review: Have you ever wanted to see Annu Kapoor in drag, a la Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill? If yes, then you might need to re-evaluate your life choices while watching Luv Ki Arrange Marriage on Zee5. The romantic comedy, directed by Ishrat R Khan, features Annu Kapoor in a double role, playing identical twins of opposite genders. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime role where he gets to be equally annoying in both capacities, with gender being no barrier. Luv Ki Arrange Marriage OTT Release: Here's When and Where To Watch Sunny Singh and Avneet Kaur's Romantic Comedy Online.

Luv Ki Arrange Marriage might sound like an interesting idea for a family entertainer, possibly greenlighted when Ayushmann Khurrana and Kartik Aaryan were thriving with small-town comedies at the box office. While that genre seems passé in the post-COVID-19 world,  the makers went for Sunny Singh, a talented actor no less, but whose box office luck is nowhere near his Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety co-star. Which could explain the direct OTT release. Or maybe people realised how bad the movie was and didn't want to spare the screens.

Luv Ki Arrange Marriage Movie Review - The Plot

Anyway, Luv Ki Arrange Marriage is about Luv (Sunny Singh), supposedly an event manager. His chaotic event-planning makes one wonder how he sustains his business. For instance, he mistakenly takes off with a dead body from a funeral he organized. However, more problematic than his business management is his Lothario of a widower father, Prem (Annu Kapoor). Prem also has an identical sister, whose husband (Mushtaq Sheikh) despises Prem but cares for his nephew.

Luv’s uncle and aunt bring him a marriage proposal from Bhopal. Ishika (Avneet Kaur) is the daughter of Supriya (Supriya Pathak), a single mother and garage owner. When Luv and his family visit Bhopal to meet Ishika, both Ishika and Luv end up rejecting each other. However, when riots occur in the city, Luv’s entourage takes refuge at Ishika’s house. Soon, Ishika and Luv develop feelings for each other, but before they can inform their parents, they receive a bigger shock – Prem and Supriya have fallen in love and want to marry.

Luv Ki Arrange Marriage Movie Review - An Outdated Romcom

There is no denying that Luv Ki Arrange Marriage has a funny premise if it was made in the '90s. It also features a talented cast known for better performances elsewhere. However, despite the whimsicality of some twists, it is difficult to find any scenes truly amusing.

A Still From Luv Ki Arrange Marriage

Some gags might have been funny two decades ago but now feel outdated, like Ishika’s brother-in-law confusing everyone by talking on his Bluetooth. Moreover, when will people stop finding a man in a woman’s dress funny? Ayushmann Khurrana already tackled this idea in Dream Girl 2 and we didn't find it funny then. Those few who still do are currently hooked on The Kapil Sharma Show on Netflix, which, I presume, would have something funnier to offer elsewhere.

Speaking of Dream Girl 2, Annu Kapoor remains in the same space as he was in that film but is more unbearable here. His antics, whether cavorting with young women or cross-dressing, fail to amuse.

A Still From Luv Ki Arrange Marriage

Sunny Singh and Avneet Kaur are competent but hampered by the rushed execution of their romantic track. At one point, they despise each other, but a song later, they are head over heels in love. Supriya’s character suffers even more. Initially portrayed as a strong, independent woman, her character's arc disintegrates once her romantic subplot is introduced, even her dressing style inexplicably changes from casual to traditional attire.

A Still From Luv Ki Arrange Marriage

The film struggles with an overabundance of characters who have little reason to be in the story, such as a thief played by Paritosh Tripathi and his romance with Supriya’s maid, which adds nothing to the plot and isn’t entertaining in its own right.

The only actor who remains somewhat engaging is Rajpal Yadav, playing Supriya’s silent admirer who wishes to marry her. It’s unfortunate that most of the jokes, when not working to be ageist, target his short stature.

Luv Ki Arrange Marriage Movie Review - Final Thoughts

Luv Ki Arrange Marriage squanders its talented cast with unfunny jokes, underdeveloped characters, and outdated storytelling. It doesn't even have the guts to push forward with the supposedly progressive idea it tried to explore. Luv Ki Arrange Marriage is streaming on Zee5.
