Legendary filmmaker passes away at 95.
Noted Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away at the age of 95 on December 30. Reportedly, the filmmaker died around 10:30 am on Sunday morning at his home in Bhawanipore, Kolkata, according to a report in Anandbazaar Patrika. The report further suggested that Sen had been suffering from age-related ailments for a long time. Sen is considered to be one of the greatest ambassadors of Indian parallel cinema at an international level. From Dadasaheb Phalke Award to India’s highest film honour, Sen was a winner of multiple National and international awards. Some of his prominent works include 'Bhuvan Shome', 'Mrigaya', 'Akaler Sandhane', 'Calcutta 71', among others.
Just a couple hours ago, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to the micro-blogging site to express her condolences. She wrote, "It is a great loss for Bengali film industry." Mamta Banerjee's post on Twitter read, "Saddened at the passing away of Mrinal Sen. A great loss to the film industry. My condolences to his family"

Sen was born on May 14, 1923, in Faridpur in Bangladesh. Speaking of his educational background, the legend completed his high school in Bangladesh, post which he came to Kolkata. Sen studied physics at Scottish Church College, while he got a post-graduate degree from the University of Calcutta.
