Laila Majnu: Imtiaz Ali Reveals The Reason Why He Chose to Adapt One of the Most Retold Love Stories - Watch Video

Laila Majnu is considered as one of India's most loved, often retold folklore romances. Similar to that of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Laila Majnu tells the story of two star-crossed lovers who pine for each other, despite their families' objections, and therefore, inviting tragedies into their lives. The story has been retold in many movies before, and yet director Imtiaz Ali and producer Ekta Kapoor believe that generation iPhone X also need their dose of Laila Majnu.

Produced by these two stalwarts, we have a new take on the legend that is directed by Imtiaz's younger brother, Sajid Ali. The movie stars Tripti Dimri, Mir Sarwar and Avinash Tiwary in important roles. We had already seen the teaser of the film, which looked beautiful and poignant. But it still doesn't' answer the question - why the need to adapt a story that has been told so often?

In a new video that Imtiaz Ali shared on his Instagram, the director, who previously made acclaimed love stories like Jab We Met and Rockstar, talks about how every past generation insists that the next generation doesn't know what love is. A view that he doesn't agree with. He captioned the video as, "For over a thousand years, the tale of Laila-Majnu’s love is being told & heard. There has to be something about this story that connects with each passing generation. Trends and expressions change, people come and go, but Laila Majnu never goes out of fashion. It’s fascinating. Here are some my thoughts on this and a lot more in-Laila Majnu Tales by Imtiaz Ali." Interesting!

Earlier in an interview, Imtiaz Ali had this to say about the movie, "Laila Majnu is an eternal story of everlasting love. It’s perhaps the most popular love story of all times. For the film we wanted a fresh approach in all aspects – a fresh cast, a fresh script and a fresh setting. We had a great experience making the film and can’t wait to showcase it to the world." Laila Majnu is scheduled to release on August 24.
