Karwaan Trailer: As Dulquer Salmaan Makes His Bollywood Debut, Here's What Happened When His Father Mammootty Did The Same In The Early '90s!

We all know that the Malayalam heartthrob Dulquer Salmaan is making his Bollywood debut with Karwaan, the trailer of which came out some time back. The movie is a road trip comedy about three individuals, one of them being played by Dulquer and the other two by Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar. While Irrfan definitely steals the show with his brand of humour, a restrained Dulquer has already won a lot of female fans with his presence in the trailer.

While he is quite active in Malayalam industry, Dulquer has impressive inroads into Tamil and Telugu industry with OK Kanmani and Mahanati respectively. With Karwaan, it will be like an acid-test for Dulquer about impressing the Hindi audiences. He also has a second chance, as Dulquer is all set to play the male lead in the movie adaptation of the novel, The Zoya Factor, opposite Sonam Kapoor. If you know more about the actor and his illustrious father, the superstar Mammootty, you might remember that the latter had also tried to make a huge move to Bollywood in the early '90s. Dhartiputra, directed by Iqbal Durrani, was Mammootty's big break in Bollywood. The movie which came out in 1993 was launched in a big way, taking into account the Malayalam superstar's big clout in Kerala. He was playing a cop in the movie that had him romancing Nagma. The movie also had a decent supporting cast in Jaya Prada, Farah, Suresh Oberoi and Danny Denzongpa, with Rishi Kapoor in a cameo. Check out a song from the movie -

However, despite the fanfare, Dhartiputra bombed at the box office, and like many of the other South stars, like Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Vikram, even Mammootty was not warmly welcomed by the Hindi audiences. He later appeared in a small role in the Mithun Chakroborthy starrer, Swami Vivekananda, as well as in the indie flick, Sau Jhooth Ek Sach, that came out in 2005.

Interestingly, while Dhartiputra might have been Mammootty's first Bollywood film, it was not his first Hindi flick. He was seen in a cameo in the 1990 film Triyatri, that was produced by Children's Film Society.

Let's hope that Dulquer Salmaan sees a better future in Bollywood that his father; though it hardly matters for Mammootty since he continues to reign Malayalam cinema, along with his closest rival Mohanlal! Karwaan, meanwhile, will release on August 3.
