To be extremely honest, Karwaan's trailer does no justice to what the film actually is and this is probably the first time that I am disappointed in a trailer after watching the film. Karwaan has entertainment, emotions, laugh riot written all over it. Dulquer Salmaan, the Mallu man who is the heartthrob of the nation, and Mithila Palkar, the internet sensation makes their debuts in Bollywood with this film. This was Irrfan Khan's last film before he announced about fighting neuroendocrine tumour and took time off to get the necessary treatment. Watching Karwaan will literally make you feel like your life is the best and no, not because it's tragic or something.
Irrfan completely steals the show in the first half. Even his presence on the screen will make you laugh your heart out. He is the only actor in Bollywood who can have a nonchalant, random conversation with a stranger on the big screen and leave you in splits. I am quite tempted to give away spoilers but I won't! Not the important ones anyway. He steals the limelight from Dulquer and Mithila, especially when all three are sharing screen space at the same time. We pretty much know the plot of the film after watching Karwaan's trailer. I won't stress too much on the plot or the story because it's been written really well.
It's a very simple film. It's funny sometimes and emotional at the same time. Though I honestly feel they could have used Dulquer more than they have. Having watched most of his South films, I can say that this film was easy breezy for the actor. Effortless acting and Oh my God, so charming! Mithila plays a teenager a lot of kids from our generation will relate to. It's okay for people from our generation to be sexually active, to move on from tragic incidents quickly or easily. Not speaking for everyone here but the current young generation is quite open-minded and sorted in a lot of ways. Mithila's character, Tanya, is that one person who thinks it's okay to move on, to be sexually active and follow your heart in life.
Dulquer's character, Avinash, is a middle-aged guy, who is stuck somewhere between the age-old values and the new ones. Also, he has Daddy issues! Oops, spoilers! Irrfan, the hilarious Shaukat, is still stuck in the era where women are expected to be dressed completely without flaunting even their legs. In fact, he doesn't even let Tanya enter his van only because she wore a dress that were flaunting her legs. Oops, another spoiler! The entire generation gap and perceptions of these three generations is shown quite subtly. Akarsh Khurana has done a wonderful job with the film. Irrfan walks away with the best dialogues in this movie.
Yay!
- Irrfan Khan, his dialogues and the delivery
- Overall performances
- The film is visually appealing and well, an inspiration to travel bloggers
- Akarsh Khurana has done a brilliant job with the direction
- Special appreciation to Hussain Dalal for the dialogues
- The film is hilarious
Nay!
- The end was kind of predictable and a little stretched
- The humour should have been balanced for first and second half of the film. While the first half leaves you in splits and great expectations from the second half, it just gets more emotional and less funny
Final Verdict
Karwaan is a very simple film but it will definitely put a wide smile on your face, make you laugh even. Irrfan's brutally honest personality, Dulquer's mature persona and Mithila's teenager vibes make this film a complete entertainer. I would highly recommend this film.
