Kartik Aaryan-Nushrat Bharucha's Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety Entering Rs 100 Crore Club Should Be Celebrated By Bollywood - Here's Why
So congrats to the entire team of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety for this achievement.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety becomes the second movie after Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor's Padmaavat to enter Rs 100 crore club in 2018. Directed by Luv Ranjan, the romcom stars some of his regulars in the lead like Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh in the lead, with a scene-stealing turn by Alok Nath. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, after going through date shuffles thanks to Padmaavat, had released in February and connected well with the youth. But did anyone expect it to gross more than Rs 100 crore at the box office?
We didn't and that makes for a genuine surprise. Luv Ranjan has found a vibe that works with a section of the audience which loved his Pyar Ka Punchnama series. But even those movies, while profitable, haven't managed to enter the Rs 100 crore club.
Sure, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is misogynistic in nature, just like the PKP series, and is not as funny as the first Pyar Ka Punchnama movie. Even our review wasn't too kind to the movie's biased attitude to the fairer sex. However, considering that even worse movies have become superhits (looking at you Judwaa 2), there are still reasons to celebrate the success of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and its entry in the Rs 100 crore club. And I will give you three reasons why,
The first Rs 100 crore grosser that doesn't star any A-lister
Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh are all super talented and deserves more projects in Bollywood. But they are not spoken in the same vein as the Khans, the Kapoors, the Kumars, the Roshans, and the Singhs. Why, even starkids who haven't made their debut yet like Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan get more attention from the media than the leads in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. So this victory is quite special!
Last year's Fukrey Returns came close, but it ended its Rs at around Rs 80 crore.
Surviving Padmaavat's onslaught
It is not easy to come a couple of weeks after a huge movie, which is in fine flowing form at the box office, and then make a successful run out of it. While Padmaavat was on a record breaking spree (mostly thanks to Karni Sena's unintentional PR tactics), SKTKS showed Bollywood that you can hit the homerun if you know your audience and make a movie tailored for them.
It did what Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra couldn't
Like we reminded you before, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is the second movie of 2018 that made Rs 100 crore and more after Padmaavat. This is also a year where Akshay Kumar (PadMan), Sidharth Malhotra (Aiyaary), Anushka Sharma (Pari), Sonakshi Sinha (Welcome To New York) had releases and none of them could enter the Rs 100 crore club at the domestic box office.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, made on a budget of Rs 40 crore, has also more than doubled its budget with the incoming collections. So we don't blame Sunny Singh and Kartik Aaryan dancing like crazy in the below video,
So congrats to the entire team of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety for this achievement. But next time, more clean humour and less misogyny please!
