Ratna Varman Shetty who is widely known as R Varman, is the veteran art director of Indian cinema. He is the father of filmmaker Abhishek Varman, who directed the film Kalank and 2 States. R Varman, aged 72, passed away on July 30 at 12.30am, after suffering from cardiac arrest. According to reports, the noted art directed wasn’t keeping well since quite some time and was recently admitted to a hospital. The last rites of R Varman was performed by his son Abhishek Varman at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai. Kalank team Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Karan Johar and other industry members such as Anurag Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Shashank Khaitan, met the 2 States director after the rites to offer condolences, reports Mumbai Mirror.
R Varman, and an alumnus of Mumbai’s JJ School of Art, took keen interest in art direction while he was working as a publicity designer. He worked as an assistant to art director Sudhendu Roy for few years, who has done art direction for films such as Sujata, Madhumati and more. R Varman has worked as an art director for more than 350 films. He worked for films such as Karan Arjun, Andaz Apna Apna, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Aitraaz, and more. He even won Filmfare Award for Hum and Angaar in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
