After a gap of three years (for Bollywood atleast), Kajol will return to the big screen this year with Eela. In Bollywood, she was last seen in Shah Rukh Khan's 2015 film Dilwale. She had also appeared as an antagonist in Dhanush's social thriller, VIP 2. The acclaimed actress' sort of comeback film is bankrolled by her husband Ajay Devgn's production company and Jayantilal Gada's PEN films.
Pradeep Sarkar is directing Eela. The film-maker had earlier helmed strong women-oriented films and is known for making Vidya Balan's Parineeta, Rani Mukerji's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Deepika Padukone's Lafangey Parindey. This is the first time he is directing Kajol in a movie. The recent National Award winner for Best Actor, Bengali actor Riddhi Sen is playing her son in the movie. Riddhi Sen was also a part of Sanjay Dutt's comeback movie, Bhoomi.
Now we got to know that Eela has found a release date on September 14, which is awesome news. It will be clashing with the much delayed Bhaiyyaji Superhitt, starring Sunny Deol, Arshad Warsi, Preity Zinta, Ameesha Patel and Shreyas Talpade.
Talking more about Eela, it is based on the Gujarati play Beta Kaagdo. Kajol is playing a single mother in the movie, who is an aspiring singer. Ship of Theseus fame Anand Gandhi is scripting the movie. Interestingly the play was loosely based on his mother's life, while Riddhi will play the director. Speaking to TOI, he revealed, "The film is based on a play, which itself was loosely based on my mother's life. My mother is very excited to see Kajol in the film. I am an admirer of her work. I love talking and discussing ideas with her. I was happy to interact with both Ajay and Kajol. They have sensitive perspectives that surprised me about my story."
