Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan were two of the most famous screenwriters in the history of Hindi films. Movies in the 70s had their names appearing on the credit role even before Amitabh Bachchan in many blockbusters. They have made superstars out of many actors, including Big B. But in the early 80s, both separated. Javed Akhtar's pen still continued to make us his kayal as the way he weaves words around emotions and feelings is simply splendid. We are so honoured and blessed to have such wordsmith spinning lyrics that stay with us for a long time. In fact, a few of them become commonly used phrases. Javed Akhtar Dedicates Song from ‘LOC: Kargil’ to Captain Vikram Batra on His Death Anniversary

Today on his birthday, we will reminisce a few heartwarming, beautiful and equally heartbreaking lyrics penned by the brilliant Javed Akhtar.

'Tum chupana sakogi mei woh raaz hu'

Tum bhula na sakogi woh andaaz hu

Goonjta hoon jo dil mein to hairaan ho kyu

Mein tumhare hi dil ki to awaaz hoon'

This track is from Veer Zara where Shah Rukh Khan is serenading Priety Zinta but it's all in her head. Every bit of these words above makes you feel a warmth trickling down to the organ called the heart and it starts beating faster. Such a wizard!

Chahe jo tumhe pure dil se

Milta hai woh mushkil se

Aisa jo koi kahin ho

Bas wohi sabse haseen hai

Kal Ho Na Ho is not a song, it's an anthem because it's a life lesson. Being happy in life with what we have rather than sulking or crying over what we don't. These lines summarise the feeling of finding the one and not ignoring them!

Jaise shayar ka khwab

Jaise Ujli kiran

Jaise van mei hiran

Jaise Chandni Raat

Jaise Nagme me ki baat

Jaise mandir mei ho ek jalta diya

Ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga

When was the last time you heard a song where a girl's beauty is compared with every beautiful thing nature has given us? All we hear today is how a girl is Coca cola...it doesn't even make sense! Akhtar outdid himself with this song in 1942 A Love Story.

Jo barsein sapne boond boond

Nainon ko moond moond

Kaise mei chalu

Dekhna sakoon anjaane raaste

Goonja sa hai koi iktara

Wake Up Sid is such a mood-lifter but what's even better are the songs, especially Iktara. The lines above describe how life is a curveball and there's someone who leaves you with so many happy dreams. Love sounds so beautiful when Akhtar writes it!

Yeh kahaan aa gaye hum

Tere saath chalte chalte

Tere baahon mei hai janam

Mere jism-o-jaan pighalte

The most remarkable asset of Yash Chopra's Silsila, apart from the love triangle, was the songs. Shot in Kashmir for the most parts, they were enchanting which only got better with Akhtar's supreme lyrics. This first line of this song is used in regular conversation!

Tum chale jaoge to sochenge

Tum chale jaoge to sochenge

Hum ne kya khoya hum ne kya paya

Zindagi dhoop, tum ghana saaya

Tum ko dekha to ye khayal aaya

Jagjit Singh's lilting voice made this song from Saath Saath wonderous to hear which only got accentuated by Akhtar's profound lyrics! Take for example these lines, Faroque Sheikh's character knows the biggest feeling of loss will be to see her, played by Deepti Naval, go, even when life has not been kind to him.

Main Tumse Kahongi

Mujhko Bhoole Se Bhi Chaand Tum Na Kaho

Chand Mein To Kayee Daag Hain

Mujhe Phool Na Kahna, Vo Murjhate Hain

Jugnu Bhi Na Kahna, Vo Kho Jaate Hain

A really quirky and extremely fun song is Agar main kahu from Lakshya. The spunky lyrics for Preity gel with her and her character extremely well. Women of today don't want men to appreciate her beauty and call her the moon. Sometimes just saying I Love You is enough!

Jagamagati Hui Jaagti Raat Hai

Raat Hai Ya Sitaaron Ki Baarat Hai

Jagamagati Hui Jaagti Raat Hai

Raat Hai Ya Sitaaron Ki Baarat Hai

Ek Din Dil Ki Raahon Mein Apne Liye

Jal Uthenge Mohabbat Ke Itne Diye

Maine Socha Na Tha

This is what falling in love sounds like. Every bit of the words written by Akhtar here makes you yearn to feel that feeling, the butterfly in the stomach. Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla's chemistry is even better in Yess Boss.

Raat ki hatheli par

Chaand jagmagata hai

Uski narm kirno mei

Tumko dekhta hoon to

Dil dhadak sa jata hai

Refugee may not have become a brilliant border love story but its songs are to die for. Our favourite is Raat ki hatheli par. Mukhda itself takes our heart, all thanks to Akhar's words that make you feel all kinds of feelings.

Ye tumhari meri baatein

Hamesha yun hi chalti rahe

Ye humari mulakatein

Hamesha yun hi chalti rahe

This song from Rock On! stirs something in you. One of those nights which you spend just talking to a person who could just be the one. We wish the conversation never ends.

All of them are our favourites. Which one is yours?
