Whoever thought Dhadak would become a franchise? The 2018 film, which became the launchpad for star kids Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, was a remake of Nagraj Manjule's acclaimed blockbuster Sairat, produced by Karan Johar. Dhadak was a box office hit, but Shashank Khaitan's directorial was heavily criticised by those who felt it missed the essence of Sairat. Now, six years later, Dharma Productions is coming up with Dhadak 2, a spiritual sequel featuring new leads Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. At least this time, Karan Johar won't be accused of promoting nepotism. Confirmed! Dhadak 2 Is Remake of Pariyerum Perumal; All You Need To Know About Mari Selvaraj’s Acclaimed Film and Where To Watch It Online.

Like the first Dhadak film, Dhadak 2 also revolves around an inter-caste romance, as established in the teaser announcement video revealed on May 27. And like the first Dhadak, Dhadak 2 is also a remake, this time inspired by Mari Selvaraj's highly praised Pariyerum Perumal (which translates to 'The God Who Mounts a Horse'). Interestingly, the Tamil film, which starred Kathir and 'Kayal' Anandhi, was released the same year as Dhadak.

If the May 27 announcement video of Dhadak 2 surprised fans with the film's existence, they shouldn't be shocked. Yet there are some whose reasons to be surprised are more out of incredulity, and that's because Karan Johar had denied the existence of such a project in April 2023 on Instagram!

That Instagram story from the director-producer is now going viral after the announcement teaser was revealed, prompting us to wonder why he denied it in the first place.

To give you some background on what happened in April 2023, Pinkvilla did an exclusive story based on sources about Karan Johar making Dhadak 2. The story even claimed that debutante Shazia Iqbal would be the director of the sequel and confirmed the lead roles. The source was quoted as saying, "After contemplating several subjects, the filmmaker has greenlit a subject that qualifies as a sequel to Dhadak. The film will be directed by Shazia Iqbal, marking her debut as a director. Both Siddhant and Tripti are excited to feature in a raw and intense love story." Several reports then also confirmed that Dhadak 2 would be a remake of Pariyerum Perumal, which had outraged fans of the Tamil film, who took to social media to express their ire.

All of this was confirmed in the May 24 reveal. So why did Karan Johar deny even making such a film when he himself had to announce it a year later? Did the outrage caused by mere reports on the remake of a beloved film trouble him then that he had to contradict the news?

Anyway, Dhadak 2 is scheduled to release on November 22, between Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 (November 15) and Anurag Basu's Metro... In Dino (November 29). The music is scored by Shreyas Puranik, with lyrics by Siddharth-Garima. So, how excited are you about the Dhadak 2 announcement? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
