Yes, there's sex. Lots of it. Dozens of semi-naked bodies too. But the action happens between the sheets. The purpose of titillating is faithfully served, you see. Hate Story 4 featuring Urvashi Rautela, Karan Wahi, Vivan Bhatena and Gulshan Grover has every ingredient to fuel tharkipan. It has a noteworthy background score. And it also offers tonnes of twists and turns. What it lacks though is well... a story. Looks like the director hates to see any story unfold, thereby justifying the title of his production. "Bedroom mein kiye hue promises, boardroom mein nahi kaam aate," goes a line or something to similar effect. The agenda is clear--there will be infidelity, deceit and drama involving bharpoor sex.
With that promise director Vshal Pandya unleashes women with heaving bosoms, men with ripped torso and steamy scenes that can put even a C-grade Bhojpuri endeavor to shame (in terms of the 'product' placement.) No, we mean the steamy sequences are beautifully shot. Especially the ones that are mounted to get you aroused. There's a hint of aesthetic if not grace there, but the frequency in which these steamy sequences are totted out,one after the other, makes you wonder if there was any plot to offer in the first place. Conventional wisdom dictates that sex should be peppered smartly in an excitingly thrilling narrative. Exactly opposite is the true in case of this insipid drama.
The film has loopholes the size of the lunar caterers. And there are too many things happening at the same time (in the bedroom or in the boardroom). So you have a murder placed bang in the center to justify the much needed thrill quotient. You have a revenge saga of sorts unfolding with no clear agenda or a drive. There are maneuvering and manipulations bubbling up to the fore for no rhythm or reason. A subplot involving a hideous date rape attempt turning into a seemingly mushy tale looks forced and it is too heavy to digest. The plot gets more complex with every passing sequence and you get exhausted with the loud sinister characters.
You have the two leading men, playing brothers, falling for the same woman. What's worse is that the epitome of tharkipan, the father figure, played by Gulshan Grover, too lays his eyes on the same damsel in distress. Bang! It can't get simpler than this, right? Add to it the acting of unbelievably shoddy standards. Karan Wahi does't act. And it's not his hoarse voice, as many would argue, that hampers his effort to deliver an act. The otherwise successful TV host simply hams to draw yawns. Vivan is easy on the eye, while Urvashi allows her assets do the talking. The girl has potential, but for an endeavor such as this she relies completely on what she is ahem.... endowed with.
So if you are happy with beautiful men and women sauntering in and out of the frame sans their clothes with the bare essentials and animalistic instincts intact, go grab your...err bucket of popcorn and enjoy the 'show'
