Shah Rukh Khan, what exactly are you upto? Ever since the debacle of the much-hyped Zero in December 2018, Shah Rukh Khan has been taking it easy when it comes to movie projects. It is not that he is laying low- the Bollywood superstar continues to make to the headlines somehow, whether it is being a guest on the David Letterman talk show or roasting the hell out of the film critics at their own event. As far his future screen appearances go by, the only thing that's confirmed for now is that Shah Rukh Khan is hosting the second season of TED Talks. In between, he is busy producing projects, recently earning a hit with Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu's Badla.
It's as if King Khan has taken the box office failure of Zero to his heart, and is now making his fans squirm in restless anticipation for his next film. That hasn't stopped the gossipmongers from announcing an SRK movie nearly every week. Shah Rukh Khan has gone mum on what he is about to do next, but we hear these stories about how he is almost confirmed to work with directors like Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Madhur Bhandarkar and the most recent being, Rajkumar Hirani. So just to get everything under one roof, we look at all the movies and directors that Shah Rukh Khan has been rumoured to work with for his next film.
Saare Jahaan Se Achcha
Before Zero came out, Shah Rukh Khan was almost confirmed to play Rakesh Sharma, India's first astronaut to walk in space in Mahesh Mathai's film. If you do not count Asoka, this could have been SRK's first biopic. But after the failure of Zero, SRK reportedly dropped out of this project, and there were rumours that the makers are now looking at Vicky Kaushal to replace him. Recently, a new rumour persists that the talks are back on for SRK to play the lead. However, there never has been any kind of official announcement about anything right from the start!
Vikram Vedha Remake
Tamil cult film, Vikram Vedha getting a Bollywood treatment was exciting news for sure, with Baby fame Neeraj Pandey on board as a producer. The makers were seriously eyeing SRK to play the role of the story-telling gangster Vedha, played by a charismatic Vijay Sethupathi in the original. But after the initial fuss, there has been no development on this.
Don 3
The announcement of Don 3 was long in the making ever since Don 2 ended with a tease for a sequel. Shah Rukh Khan had always shown interest in the idea, and Farhan Akhtar had kept in teasing us that it could happen soon. Priyanka Chopra, the lead actress in the previous films, will not be a part of the film if and when it happens. But the director is busier in acting these days, and is not giving us a proper update on the project, and Don 3 continues to be in the backburner for some more time.
A Madhur Bhandarkar Film
A piece of interesting news that came in between is that Chandni Bar and Page 3 fame Madhur Bhandarkar had approached SRK for a movie called Inspector Ghalib. The project revolved around the sand mining mafia in the interiors and was to be a hard-hitting drama. At an award show, Madhur was asked about SRK's involvement in the project; he smiled, but neither confirmed nor denied it.
A Sanjay Bhansali Film
Talks were strong that Sanjay Leela Bhansali might work with Shah Rukh Khan again, after having done so in Devdas. The project was supposed to be a two-hero film, with the other lead being played by Salman Khan. This turned out to be false when Salman Khan turned out to be the sole male lead in SLB's next, Inshallah. However, there is another rumoured project called Izhaar, that is believed to be the one SLB wants to work with SRK.
Dhoom 4
The news that Shah Rukh Khan is being eyed for the role of the main antagonist in the Dhoom franchise has been going on for years. This round of speculations got more heat recently with reports coming out that SRK has been approached for Dhoom 4. Again everything is still in a speculative stage. But won't it be a cool idea if Excel Entertainment and Yash Raj Films collaborate to make a Dhoom-Don crossover? That's a Rs 200 crore idea there, thank you very much!
A Project With Atlee
Shah Rukh Khan was recently spotted watching an IPL match with Tamil filmmaker Atlee leading to new speculations that he is might do a Bollywood remake of the director's hit film, Mersal. Another set of rumours mentioned that it will be a new project and not a remake. And yet another piece of gossip is that Shah Rukh Khan has been roped in to play the main antagonist in Thalapathy Vijay's next (tentatively titled Thalapathy 63), that is being directed by Atlee himself.
Satte Pe Satta remake
The biggest rumour about Shah Rukh Khan in recent times was that he will do his next remake of an Amitabh Bachchan classic. Gossip has it that SRK will reunite with his Om Shanti Om director Farah Khan for the remake of Satte Pe Satta, with Katrina Kaif as the female lead. What's more, director Rohit Shetty is reportedly involved in the film as a producer.
Rajkumar Hirani Love Story
The most recent rumour is that Shah Rukh Khan and blockbuster director Rajkumar Hirani are finally coming together for a love story. With Hirani still not being cleared of the #MeToo allegations against him, it is interesting to see if Khan will disregard these and say yes to Hirani, though, once again, they are still rumours. Some trivia for you, readers - SRK was supposed to be Hirani's first choice to play Munnabhai, before a back injury forced him out of the project. He was also to produce and star in another Hirani movie, before things went wrong with him and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Hirani's long-time associate. That project later fell on the laps of Aamir Khan and we know it now as 3 Idiots!
There was also gossip going around that Andhadhun fame Sriram Raghavan had approached Shah Rukh for a film. With so many rumours going around, we are hoping that Shah Rukh Khan, once and for all, break his silence on this and announce his new film soon!
